Manushi Chhillar emphasizes that effective performance begins well before engaging in physical activity. In a recent video shared on Instagram, she disclosed a ritual that has recently become integral to her morning routine. The model-turned-actress attributed her heightened energy levels and enhanced concentration to the use of methylene blue. In her post, she noted, “The Methylene blue shown here is prescribed and supervised by my physician.”

Dr. Pooja Pillai, a Consultant in Internal Medicine at Aster CMI Hospital in Bangalore, explained that methylene blue is a prescription medication utilized in the treatment of certain medical conditions, including the rare blood disorder methemoglobinemia, and is also employed in various diagnostic and surgical procedures.

“Recently, this compound has garnered attention on social media, with numerous celebrities and wellness influencers advocating its inclusion in daily routines, claiming that it boosts energy, enhances mental clarity, improves memory, and contributes to overall wellness,” she stated.

According to Dr. Pillai, the assertions surrounding methylene blue are rooted in the belief that it may enhance mitochondrial function—essential components of cells responsible for energy production—and potentially offer antioxidant benefits that safeguard cells from damage. However, she pointed out that while preliminary research has investigated these claims, there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to substantiate that methylene blue delivers these advantages in healthy individuals or that it is suitable as a daily wellness supplement.

Echoing Chhillar’s sentiments, Dr. Pillai remarked, “Methylene blue is classified as a medication, not a health supplement,” emphasizing the necessity of using it only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.

She cautioned that methylene blue can interact with various commonly prescribed medications, particularly certain antidepressants, which may elevate the risk of severe side effects. Furthermore, it is not appropriate for everyone, including individuals with specific enzyme deficiencies, certain renal or hepatic conditions, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Misusing this medication or taking inappropriate dosages can also pose significant health risks.

For the majority of healthy individuals, Dr. Pillai contends that there is no reason to incorporate methylene blue into their morning regimen merely due to its popularity on social media or its endorsement by a celebrity. She advocates for a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, effective stress management, and proper hydration as the most reliable and safest methods to enhance energy levels, cognitive health, and overall well-being.

“However, if anyone is considering methylene blue for health purposes, it is essential to consult a doctor first to determine its suitability for their specific health circumstances and to mitigate any unnecessary risks,” she concluded.
