The conclusion of the NRL and NRLW seasons arrives today, featuring the grand finals for both leagues.
In the women’s championship match, the Sydney Roosters will take on the Brisbane Broncos, revisiting last year’s final showdown. Meanwhile, in the men’s grand final, the Sydney Roosters will face the Newcastle Knights.
Here’s what you need to know about the grand finals for both the NRL and NRLW.
When are the grand finals taking place?
The grand finals for the NRL and NRLW are scheduled for Sunday, October 4, coinciding with the start of daylight saving time in various regions across the nation.
Here are the start times for each state and territory:
- 7:30 PM AEDT: New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Tasmania
- 7:00 PM ACDT: South Australia
- 6:00 PM ACST: Northern Territory
- 4:30 PM AWST: Western Australia
Where can you watch or listen to the grand finals?
The matches will be broadcast on Channel 9 and available for streaming on 9Now. Notably, this is the only game of the entire NRL season that will not be aired on Kayo or Fox Sports.
For those who prefer to listen, local ABC Sport radio coverage will be available, along with a live blog on the ABC Sport website.
Where are the grand finals being held?
Both the NRL and NRLW grand finals will take place at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Since 1999, this venue has hosted every NRL grand final, except for the 2021 match, which was relocated to Brisbane’s Lang Park due to the pandemic. Similarly, all NRLW grand finals since the league’s inception in 2018 have occurred at Stadium Australia, with the exception of the 2021 final, which was held at Dolphin Stadium in Redcliffe.
Who are the competitors in the NRL grand final?
The Sydney Roosters will compete against the Newcastle Knights for the NRL premiership. The Roosters secured fourth place on the ladder, initially losing their first finals match but bouncing back with wins over Cronulla and the Dolphins. The Newcastle Knights, who finished seventh, triumphed over Souths in the first week of the finals, then advanced by defeating the Warriors in Auckland, followed by a win against Penrith despite being reduced to 12 players in the second half.
Who are the teams in the NRLW grand final?
The Sydney Roosters enter the match with an impressive undefeated record, having won all 11 games in the regular season and clinching victory against the Canberra Raiders in the preliminary final last week. This follows a remarkable 2025 season where they remained unbeaten until losing to the Brisbane Broncos in last year’s final. The Broncos, finishing third in the standings with an 8-3 record, experienced a mid-season slump but have rallied with five consecutive victories, including last week’s preliminary final against the Gold Coast Titans.
What entertainment can fans expect before the NRL grand final?
Initially, it seemed the grand final might lack pre-match entertainment, but recent discussions between the NRL and Australian artist Tones And I led to the announcement of a star-studded performance. An ensemble of prominent Australian musicians, including Amy Shark, will perform a tribute to Jai Arrow, a recently retired player diagnosed with motor neurone disease earlier this year. Shark will be accompanied by members of popular Newcastle band The Screaming Jets, electronic duo Peking Duk, and rock bands Grinspoon and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Shark, who previously performed at the 2020 grand final, is set to present a selection of cover songs, including the iconic “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” originally by Gerry and the Pacemakers and an anthem for Liverpool FC. Reportedly, each artist’s fee will be donated to support motor neurone disease research and initiatives.
