On Sunday, local authorities reported the arrest of a U.S. Marine based in Okinawa, Japan, in connection with the death of a Japanese woman. The incident has prompted a formal protest from the Japanese government, which is seeking full cooperation from U.S. officials during the investigation.

The 20-year-old suspect is accused of murdering a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in Naha and subsequently stealing her wallet on Saturday. He has, however, denied the charges against him.

According to local media, including NHK, investigators have reviewed CCTV footage that captured a foreign man entering a hotel room with the victim and later departing with her belongings. Following this, police identified a man matching the suspect’s description and invited him to a police station, where he was subsequently arrested.

Okinawa’s newly elected Governor, Genta Koja, expressed deep concern over the incident, stating it adds to the anxiety felt by residents living near U.S. military bases. He described the crime as “absolutely unforgivable” and expressed outrage at the situation.

The victim’s brother conveyed the family’s grief through local police, stating, “We have lost a family member and are deeply saddened. My parents, in particular, are utterly devastated at the loss of their daughter,” as reported by the Asahi Shimbun.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo acknowledged the detention of a service member in connection with the case and confirmed their commitment to cooperating with Japanese authorities during the investigation. They also extended condolences to the victim’s family via social media.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan, George Glass, communicated with officials from Japan’s foreign ministry and Okinawa’s government, offering condolences and assuring full cooperation as the investigation proceeds.

This incident arises at a time when Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration is working to strengthen Japan’s military presence in Okinawa and enhance collaboration with U.S. forces. Takaichi labeled the crime as “exceptionally brutal and vicious” and indicated that Japan has formally protested to the U.S.

In her social media statements, Takaichi emphasized the need for the U.S. to provide comprehensive cooperation in the investigation, enforce stricter discipline among U.S. military personnel, and implement effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The U.S. Marine Corps confirmed that the suspect is with the III Marine Expeditionary Force stationed in Okinawa and stated that they are fully cooperating with Japanese officials. They underscored the seriousness of the allegations, asserting that all Marines are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct.

Approximately 54,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed in Japan, with a significant number located in Okinawa, which the U.S. governed from the conclusion of World War II until 1972. The relationship between the U.S. and Japan has been strained by criminal activities involving U.S. service members, including incidents of sexual assault and drunk driving. Reports indicate that arrests of U.S. personnel and their families exceeded 100 last year, according to local police data.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi remarked that incidents involving U.S. military personnel cause significant anxiety in the local community and must be prevented. In recent years, Japan has seen severe sentences imposed on U.S. service members for violent crimes, including a seven-year prison sentence for a Marine convicted of choking and attempting to assault a woman, and a life sentence for a former Marine found guilty of raping and murdering a local resident.

Furthermore, in 2017, following a fatal incident involving a drunken Marine, U.S. Forces Japan instituted a ban on alcohol consumption for all personnel.
