On Saturday, Delhi police apprehended several demonstrators, including Neha Bora, the national president of AISA, and Yogendra Yadav, a member of Swaraj India, during their march towards Jantar Mantar. The protestors were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The previous day, Bora and Yadav were among approximately 550 individuals who faced detention while attempting to reach Jantar Mantar for a similar demonstration.
Authorities stated that they had not authorized the protests on either occasion.
During the march on Saturday, protestors gathered for the second consecutive day to voice their discontent towards the Chief Election Commissioner, beginning their procession towards Jantar Mantar. Alongside Bora and Yadav were student activists, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, and advocate Prashant Bhushan. They managed to pass the initial barricades before police intervened near Jantar Mantar Road, subsequently transporting them into buses.
While being detained, Bora and her fellow protestors were observed chanting slogans.
Despite two days of protest attempts at Jantar Mantar, security measures in Central Delhi have been intensified. Prohibitory orders have been enacted in the New Delhi district, with around 5,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed and multiple layers of barricades established.
The police have filed three FIRs against unidentified individuals related to the protest on Friday, citing violations of orders issued by public officials, obstruction of public servants in the performance of their duties, and the use of criminal force against these officials, among other charges.
