McLarens Maritime Academy (MMA), a prominent and accredited institution for maritime training in Sri Lanka, celebrated its 2025 Convocation at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). This significant event honored the accomplishments of aspiring seafarers who have successfully completed their respective training programs, equipping them for entry into the international maritime workforce.
The ceremony was graced by Mr. Asanga Deshapriya, the Director General of Merchant Shipping from the Merchant Shipping Secretariat, who served as the Chief Guest. Captain Nirmal Silva, Harbor Master of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, and Mrs. Shehara De Silva, Group Managing Director of McLarens Group, were among the distinguished VVIP guests in attendance.
A number of high-ranking officials from the McLarens Group were present, including Group Directors Mr. Chandima Hulangamuwa, Captain Athula Hewawitharana, Captain Keith Jayasuriya, Mr. Shanil Perera, Admiral Jayantha Perera, Mr. Ashan Welagedara, and Mr. Ricky Barnett. The event also welcomed various representatives from affiliated companies, maritime placement agencies, and the proud parents of the graduates.
The proceedings began with the arrival of the dignitaries, followed by the singing of the national anthem and a ceremonial guard of honor performed by the students. In his address, Mr. Chandima Hulangamuwa, Managing Director of MMA, expressed his gratitude to the esteemed guests, parents, faculty, and students. He praised the cadets for their commitment and discipline throughout their training journey, urging them to uphold high standards of integrity, professionalism, and safety as they embark on their careers.
Captain Taraka Telwatta, a consultant at McLarens Maritime Academy, delivered the keynote speech, reflecting on the academy’s evolution and its dedication to providing superior maritime education and training. He underscored the increasing global demand for skilled seafarers and the plethora of career opportunities awaiting Sri Lankan youth in the international shipping sector.
Certificates were presented to the graduates of the Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program – Phase I (Batches 3 and 4), the Pre-Sea Training Course for Deck Ratings (Batch 8), and the Pre-Sea Training Course for Engine Ratings (Batches 2 and 3). Exceptional students were also honored during the Best Performance Awards segment of the ceremony.
