On Sunday, Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), took to his official X account to share a video that showcased his efforts in Parliament concerning issues pertinent to Punjab. This comes in response to internal party criticisms suggesting he had neglected to advocate for the state’s interests.
The video comprises various clips of Chadha addressing the Rajya Sabha on several topics affecting Punjab. These include the alarming drop in groundwater levels, appeals related to the legacy of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, and other state-specific concerns. He also emphasizes the necessity of legal assurances for the minimum support price (MSP) for farmers and advocates for initiatives such as a corridor to Nankana Sahib.
In his post, Chadha countered the claims of his critics within AAP, remarking, “To my colleagues in AAP who were compelled to release videos stating that ‘Raghav Chadha failed to raise Punjab’s issues in Parliament,’ here is a small preview… The story is far from over.” He further asserted that Punjab represents more than just a topic for discussion; it embodies “my home, my duty, my soil, my soul.”
This reaction arises amidst escalating tensions between Chadha and the leadership of AAP. Several party leaders, particularly from Punjab, have expressed dissatisfaction with Chadha’s representation of state issues in Parliament, accusing him of sidestepping critical political matters. Punjab’s Finance Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, criticized Chadha for failing to address “sensitive issues” affecting the state, labeling his silence a “betrayal” of the people of Punjab.
Additionally, AAP’s Delhi president, Saurabh Bharadwaj, has claimed that Chadha has not been sufficiently vocal against the central government or Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that he has engaged in what they characterize as “soft PR.” Concerns have also been raised regarding his absence during significant political events and his position during opposition protests in Parliament. Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi remarked on the increasing discord between Chadha and the party.
In response to these allegations, Chadha has characterized them as “falsehoods” and part of a “coordinated attack,” asserting that his parliamentary role is focused on addressing public concerns rather than creating disruptions. He previously stated that he has voiced a multitude of issues impacting citizens, including inflation and unemployment.
This situation follows his recent removal from the position of AAP’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, a move interpreted as indicative of a deeper schism between Chadha and the party hierarchy. While the party has described this as an organizational decision, the incident underscores existing internal disagreements within AAP regarding political strategy and communication.
