Jaishankar Engages with Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi on Bilateral Ties and Regional Issues

On Sunday, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, engaged in a phone call with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which they addressed matters concerning their bilateral relations as well as broader regional and international issues amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Jaishankar shared details of the conversation on social media, stating, “Received a call from Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi of Iran. Discussed the present situation.”

The discussion with Araghchi follows Jaishankar’s earlier communications with the Qatari Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and the UAE’s Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. These discussions also centered on the West Asia conflict and its ramifications for global energy resources.

This engagement occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia, triggered by a recent ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to target Iran’s infrastructure unless it reopened the Strait of Hormuz to shipping by a specified deadline.

As a result of Iran’s near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route that accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply, global energy prices have seen a significant rise. This blockade followed joint military actions by the U.S. and Israel against Iran.

Despite the tensions, reports indicate that Iran has permitted vessels from allied nations, including India, to navigate through the Strait of Hormuz.
