SYNOPSIS: Tim David’s remarkable six-hitting performance stood out in a dominant batting display by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), leading them to their fourth consecutive victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Before the season commenced, RCB’s director of cricket, Mo Babat, issued a clear message: “We aspire to be attacking champions, not defending ones.” On Sunday, during their match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium against CSK, RCB demonstrated that the pressure of being former champions would not hinder their ambitions. This venue has a rich history of explosive batting, previously showcased by legends like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers. Joining this elite list was Tim David, who hammered eight sixes and scored an impressive 70 runs off just 25 balls, propelling RCB to a fourth straight win in the Southern Derby.
For CSK, the season is already shaping up to be a challenging one, as they faced a comprehensive defeat. Their squad appeared unbalanced and struggled throughout the match. Although they managed to stay in contention until the 10th over of RCB’s innings, they faltered significantly, conceding 159 runs in the latter half of the innings. In their attempt to chase a daunting target of 250, CSK found themselves in dire straits at 30 for 3 within three overs. Sarfaraz Khan’s 50 and Prashant Veer’s 43 were the only noteworthy contributions in a disappointing outing.
RCB batted first but did not start strong. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, eager to apply pressure on the opposition, made some mistakes against a lackluster CSK bowling attack. The CSK seamers executed their early overs effectively, not allowing a single boundary in the first three overs. Kohli eventually broke the silence with a deft shot that sent the ball soaring over the boundary. This marked the beginning of RCB’s momentum, which escalated quickly.
After the powerplay, RCB had scored only 51 runs and had lost Kohli. CSK still maintained some control at that point. Devdutt Padikkal, like the opening batsmen, found it tough to get going, scoring just 17 runs off his first 16 balls. Salt, however, kept RCB afloat until he was dismissed by Shivam Dube in the 11th over, with RCB scoring just under 9 runs per over. At that juncture, Salt had tallied 46 runs off 30 balls, contributing significantly to their total of 93 runs.
The introduction of Rajat Patidar marked the turning point for CSK, coinciding with a questionable tactical decision by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. By handing the ball to Dube—who had bowled only three overs in the IPL since the start of 2022—it proved to be a critical moment. Dube managed to remove Salt but then quickly became a liability, conceding runs. Following Salt’s dismissal, Padikkal found his rhythm and opened the floodgates, scoring freely alongside Patidar.
In just 16 deliveries, Padikkal and Patidar amassed 50 runs, including five sixes and three boundaries. Patidar, exuding confidence as he entered the fray, struck a six on his second ball. Meanwhile, Padikkal, after finding the boundary, reached his fifty off just 28 balls before being dismissed. Patidar continued to dominate, hitting three sixes in his first seven deliveries and smashing Khaleel Ahmed for 19 runs in one over, prompting CSK to try and limit his scoring opportunities.
As CSK attempted to manage the threat, Tim David’s explosive onslaught buried any remaining hopes they had. Facing Noor’s spin, which is traditionally less favorable for him, David capitalized on a slight miscalculation, launching three consecutive sixes into different zones of the ground. In the 19th over, he unleashed a barrage against Jamie Overton, scoring six, two, four, and three sixes in succession, with each six seemingly bigger than the last. RCB ended up scoring an astonishing 97 runs in the final five overs, leaving CSK with no answers.
Brief Scores: RCB: 250/3 (Tim David 70*, Devdutt Padikkal 50, Anshul Kamboj 1/52) defeated CSK: 207 in 19.4 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 50, Prashant Veer 43, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/41) by 43 runs.
