Sarfaraz Khan emerged as the sole performer for Chennai Super Kings as their prominent players struggled once again, leading to a 43-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad both managed just 9 runs, while Ayush Mhatre’s attempt to build on his previous performance fell short with only 1 run. Kartik Sharma and Shivam Dube contributed 14 and 18 runs, respectively, but their efforts were insufficient.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru put on a spectacular display, setting an impressive total of 250 runs for 3. Tim David, captain Rajat Patidar, and Devdutt Padikkal delivered explosive performances, with Padikkal scoring 50 runs off 29 balls and David hitting 70 off just 25 balls. Patidar also made a significant impact with an unbeaten 48 runs from 19 deliveries, showcasing the vulnerability of the Super Kings’ bowling attack.
The innings kicked off with Devdutt Padikkal, who played a pivotal role in two significant partnerships: a 56-run stand (37 balls) with Phil Salt, who scored 46, and a 58-run collaboration (21 balls) with captain Patidar. These partnerships were crucial on a Chinnaswamy pitch that showed some sluggishness after CSK opted to bowl first.
Salt played an aggressive role during the second wicket partnership, helping the team recover after the early exit of Virat Kohli, who scored 28 runs and was dropped on seven by Shivam Dube. However, Salt’s dismissal, caught by Ahmad in the deep off Dube, shifted the momentum of RCB’s innings. Devdutt, initially on 18 runs from 17 balls, ramped up his aggression, hitting Dube for multiple boundaries and taking the team’s scoring rate above 10 runs per over for the first time.
Devdutt reached his second consecutive fifty of the IPL before being dismissed while attempting a reverse scoop against Jamie Overton. By that time, RCB had accumulated 62 runs between the 11th and 15th overs. Following Devdutt’s exit, Patidar and David capitalized on the foundation laid.
After 15 overs, Bengaluru stood at 153 for 3 and managed to add another 97 runs in the final five overs, taking advantage of some wayward bowling from CSK during the death overs.
Patidar and David were relentless in their fourth-wicket partnership, amassing 99 runs off just 36 balls as they struck the ball to all parts of the ground. Patidar particularly targeted Khaleel Ahmed, hitting him for two sixes and a four in his final over. David then took aim at Ahmad, smashing three sixes in the 17th over.
In a display of power hitting, the Australian further punished Overton in the 19th over, hitting four sixes, including three consecutively, as CSK’s bowling weaknesses were once again laid bare against a formidable batting lineup.
