Tim David showcased an impressive performance by scoring an unbeaten 70 runs off just 25 balls, leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a commanding 43-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In contrast, fellow Australian Travis Head faced a challenging match as his team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, lost to Lucknow in a nail-biting finish on the final ball.
During the match in Bengaluru, RCB’s top order set a strong foundation, reaching 151 runs for the loss of three wickets. David, along with captain Rajat Patidar, who scored 48 runs off 19 balls, formed a formidable partnership that added 99 runs in just 35 balls for the unbroken fourth wicket, propelling the team to a total of 250 runs in 20 overs — marking their third-highest score in IPL history.
After being put to bat first, Bengaluru got off to a rapid start with Phil Salt contributing 46 runs off 30 balls and Virat Kohli adding 28 runs, putting together 37 runs in just 4.3 overs. Salt struck two sixes and formed a solid 56-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 50 runs off 29 balls, for the second wicket.
Following Salt’s dismissal in the 11th over, Padikkal and Patidar continued the momentum by adding 58 runs off just 21 balls, taking the team past 150 runs in a mere 13.5 overs.
Padikkal’s exit brought David to the crease, and he, along with Patidar, dismantled Chennai’s bowling attack. David was initially bowled off a no-ball while on 28 runs from 15 balls but went on to score 50 runs off 21 balls. RCB finished strongly, amassing 97 runs in the last five overs, with David scoring 30 runs off Jamie Overton in the 19th over.
In response, Chennai struggled early, finding themselves at 5 wickets for 84 runs. Sarfaraz Khan (50 off 25) attempted to rally the middle order, but the five-time champions were ultimately dismissed for 207 runs in 19.4 overs.
With this victory, Bengaluru climbed to the top of the points table, enjoying a strong run rate and consecutive wins, while Chennai found themselves at the bottom of the 10-team league after suffering three consecutive defeats.
Earlier in the day, Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant guided his team to victory, scoring 68 not out off 50 balls, as they defeated Head’s Sunrisers by five wickets with just one ball to spare, marking their first win of the season.
Head, who scored 7 runs off 8 balls, witnessed his opening partner Abhishek Sharma dismissed for a duck on the last ball of the first over, before following suit shortly after. Captain Ishan Kishan also fell for just 1 run in the subsequent over, leaving the team in a precarious position. Only half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen (62 off 41) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (56 off 33) salvaged the innings, which struggled to reach 156 runs for 9 wickets.
For the third consecutive match, Head was replaced during the bowling innings of his team.
In response, Pant delivered a stellar performance, hitting nine fours during his innings, while opener Aiden Markram contributed 45 runs off 27 balls, leading Lucknow to a total of 160 runs for 5 in 19.5 overs. Mohammed Shami was awarded the Player of the Match for his exceptional bowling performance, taking 2 wickets for just 9 runs in four overs, including the dismissals of both openers within his first seven deliveries.
