A 20-year-old cadet at the Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune tragically lost his life after the rim of a basketball hoop at the institute’s sports facility became dislodged while he was hanging from it on Sunday morning.
Authorities reported that the cadet suffered a severe head injury as a result of the fall. Fellow cadets have called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, expressing concerns about possible negligence on the part of the institute.
The deceased has been identified as Vishal Verma, hailing from Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 AM on Sunday.
According to initial investigations, Verma was exercising on the sports grounds of the institute. After completing a run, he proceeded to the basketball court. While hanging onto the rim of the hoop, it detached, causing him to fall. He sustained a critical head injury and was subsequently transported to Talegaon General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
A police officer from the Talegaon MIDC station stated, “The medical professionals confirmed that the head injury was fatal. Cadets at the institute have requested a comprehensive investigation into the matter, raising concerns about negligence. An accidental death case has been filed, and an inquiry is underway to determine the precise circumstances and cause of the accident.”
