Struggling Bombers confront the prospect of an undesirable milestone

Essendon Football Club is currently enduring a challenging phase, having lost 17 consecutive matches in the Australian Football League (AFL), a streak that extends back to the previous season.

Head coach Brad Scott remains optimistic, asserting that he does not consider the possibility of reaching the finals to be completely unattainable, despite the team’s disappointing start to the season with four straight losses.

This weekend, the Bombers will face the Melbourne Demons at Adelaide Oval during the Gather Round, amidst the looming threat of setting a new club record with an 18th consecutive defeat, a situation Scott acknowledges as demoralizing.

Essendon’s latest setback came on Sunday night when they were defeated by the Western Bulldogs by 34 points, marking their 17th loss. The club previously suffered a similar plight in 2016, when several players were suspended due to the supplements scandal.

The current losing streak is compounded by last season’s unfortunate 13-game run, which was heavily influenced by injuries to key players. Scott remarked, “This is a reality that cannot be disputed. There’s no point in debating it.”

He added, “Nobody emphasizes that for the majority of those matches, we struggled to field a full team. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, and I don’t dwell on it either. It’s a situation we have to confront, and while it can be disheartening, it’s the challenge we must tackle.”

Scott emphasized the importance of leadership during this time, stating that the leaders must keep the team united and perform on the field. He expressed confidence that the winless streak was not adversely affecting the players. “On the surface, there may be cause for concern, but I don’t observe that within the group,” he noted.

“I firmly believe in the character of our team and the players we have brought in. They are demonstrating resilience, even without immediate rewards, and I am optimistic that they possess the right qualities to overcome this period.”

Despite the 0-4 record, Scott is not ready to abandon hope for the season. “History shows that many teams have started worse, such as 0-5 or 0-6, and ended up making the finals. We are not in a position to dismiss the possibility of finals yet,” he stated. “However, our primary focus remains on the consistent development of our players.”

In positive news for the team, defender Jordan Ridley is expected to return for the match against Melbourne, and there are no new injury concerns for Zach Reid, who has been struggling with injuries but managed to avoid a new hamstring issue. Reid sat out the last quarter of Sunday’s game due to hamstring awareness, a precaution taken by Scott. “He expressed a desire to play in the final quarter, but considering his injury history, I decided it was best to err on the side of caution,” Scott explained.
