Tovino Thomas encourages viewers of his forthcoming film, Pallichattambi, to focus on the narrative rather than searching for a specific message. He emphasizes the importance of experiencing the story first, allowing its themes to resonate naturally.
In an interview with SCREEN, Tovino elaborated on his role as an outsider who enters a village central to the film’s plot, embodying the character of a Pallichattambi, or church enforcer. The unfolding events in the village and the protagonist’s personal growth through these experiences constitute the film’s emotional foundation.
While religion plays a role in the film’s backdrop, Tovino asserts that it is not the primary focus. He remarked, “If you were to substitute it with another religion, the essence of the story would remain unchanged. The narrative takes precedence.” In this way, the setting enhances the story rather than dictates it.
This principle also applies to the film’s political context. Tovino noted that Pallichattambi reflects the social and political landscape of 1950s Kerala, which will inevitably influence the film’s depiction of that era. He stated, “Elements from that time may be incorporated into the film, but we are not emphasizing any specific historical event. Our intention was to weave in fictional elements.”
Interestingly, Tovino discussed the distinction between personal beliefs and the film’s message. He clarified that the film aims to highlight a universal theme of humanity rather than adhering to any political stance. “The only political message we wish to convey is one of compassion,” he expressed.
Despite its historical and social themes, Tovino insists that Pallichattambi is designed to be a family-friendly film. “There’s nothing that prevents you from bringing your children along,” he assured, pointing out that it contains all the elements of a family entertainer, including emotional depth, action, and warmth to engage audiences.
Pallichattambi is set to premiere globally on April 10, 2026.
