On Monday, Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, a candidate from the Congress party, submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming byelection in the Umreth Assembly constituency, located in Anand district, Gujarat. This election is set for April 23.
Chauhan was joined by prominent Congress figures, including Bharat Solanki, Amit Chavda, the president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), and MLA Imran Khedawala, alongside local district leaders. During the ‘Vijay Vishwas Sammelan’ event in Umreth, Chavda praised Chauhan as a seasoned candidate with extensive experience in public service, highlighting his three terms as President of the Umreth Taluka Panchayat.
Chavda remarked, “The constituents of Umreth are familiar with Chauhan and are capable of distinguishing between genuine leaders and those seeking power for selfish gains.” He criticized the current BJP administration for its perceived arrogance, describing the byelection as a chance for Congress to challenge their alleged corrupt practices.
“The level of arrogance and complacency among BJP leaders has reached such an extent that they openly confess to engaging in corrupt activities. Those who once struggled to afford bicycles are now flaunting luxury cars and homes, all funded by taxpayer money. This election is our chance to say, ‘Enough is enough!’” Chavda referenced remarks made by former Amul Dairy Chairman Vipul Patel, who allegedly claimed to have profited during his time in politics.
Before finalizing his nomination, Chauhan expressed his commitment to revitalizing development in the Umreth constituency, which he feels has stagnated under BJP governance. He conveyed optimism regarding his chances of winning the forthcoming election.
This byelection follows the passing of the sitting BJP MLA, Govind Parmar, who had served four terms, last month. The BJP has nominated Harshad Parmar, the deceased MLA’s son, who has also submitted his nomination.
With more than 240,000 registered voters, the Umreth constituency predominantly comprises the Kshatriya community. Voting is scheduled for April 23, and results will be announced on May 4. The Election Commission has confirmed that the election will take place across 300 polling booths, utilizing electronic voting machines equipped with VVPAT systems.
