Trump warns of legal action against reporter who unveiled details of US rescue operation in Iran.

US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the journalist who initially reported the rescue of an American airman, threatening jail time if the source of the information is not disclosed. This remark was made during a press briefing at the White House, coinciding with the release of further details regarding a complex military operation aimed at recovering two crew members from a downed jet fighter.

Following the incident where an American F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iranian territory on Friday, various media outlets confirmed that US rescue teams had successfully retrieved one of the two airmen. Trump expressed concern that the publication of this information could jeopardize ongoing efforts to save the second airman, who was also ultimately recovered through a remarkable rescue operation.

“We maintained silence regarding the first airman for an hour, but then information was leaked,” Trump stated. “We are actively pursuing the source of that leak. We will approach the media organization responsible and insist they disclose their sources, citing national security concerns, or face imprisonment.” The specific media outlet or individual to whom Trump was referring remains uncertain.

Multiple American news organizations, including The New York Times, CBS News, and Axios, reported on the recovery shortly after the event transpired. In recent weeks, Trump has privately expressed dissatisfaction to aides regarding what he perceives as overly negative media coverage of US-Israeli operations against Iran.

The rescue mission has since been detailed further, following the downing of the F-15, marking the first incident of an American warplane being shot down in over five weeks of conflict. Trump noted that US-Israeli operations had apparently left Iran with diminished anti-aircraft capabilities, although Tehran’s forces succeeded in downing the F-15 and damaging other aircraft during the recovery efforts.

Trump stated that over 170 American aircraft and approximately 200 personnel participated in the operation to save the F-15 crew, receiving support from the CIA. Joined by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and senior military and CIA officials, Trump framed the successful recovery of the airman as a testament to US strength and determination.

During the press conference, Trump recounted the details of the weekend operation involving the airman, who evaded capture by concealing himself in rugged Iranian terrain. The airman, whose identity was not disclosed beyond the moniker “Dude 44 Bravo,” reportedly ascended higher in the mountains to increase his chances of being located.

Trump described the search as “like finding a needle in a haystack,” emphasizing the challenges faced by the recovery teams.

The F-15 was reportedly downed by a shoulder-fired heat-seeking missile, with its two crew members ejecting and landing in separate locations within Iran. More than 20 military aircraft were deployed in the rescue mission, navigating through hostile fire to locate the F-15 pilot.

General Dan Caine, the highest-ranking military officer in the US, described the operation as “audacious,” with forces penetrating enemy territory during daylight hours to locate and recover the pilot. The pilot was eventually rescued by helicopters, but these aircraft came under fire from Iranian forces. Despite sustaining minor injuries, the helicopter crew was reported to be safe.

Caine characterized the mission as extremely hazardous, noting that A-10 ground attack aircraft played a crucial role in suppressing enemy fire during the rescue effort. One A-10 was struck but managed to continue its mission before the pilot ejected and was safely recovered after the aircraft crashed near the Strait of Hormuz.

The search for the second crew member, the weapon systems officer, was described by CIA Director John Ratcliffe as akin to “finding a single grain of sand in a desert.” Ratcliffe emphasized the urgency of the situation, explaining that it was essential to locate the downed airman quickly while keeping Iranian forces misdirected. The CIA executed a deception strategy to mislead the Iranians, who were actively searching for the US personnel.

On Saturday morning, the CIA confirmed that the airman was alive and had taken refuge in a mountain crevice, remaining hidden from enemy forces but detectable to the agency. Hegseth mentioned that the rescued airman had activated an emergency transponder to communicate his location, with his first message expressing gratitude: “God is good.” The airman was shot down on Good Friday, remained hidden throughout Saturday, and was successfully extracted on Sunday amidst the unfolding crisis.
