The investigation into a woman’s death in the Barkly region is underway, following an incident that took place during the Easter weekend, which authorities are currently treating as suspicious.
A 33-year-old male is in custody, assisting law enforcement with their inquiries after being arrested on Monday in connection with this case.
This tragic incident adds to the already troubling statistic of five fatalities on Northern Territory roads this year, prompting police to seek public assistance in gathering more details.
Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding what they have termed a “suspicious death” that occurred in the Northern Territory on a remote highway during the early hours of Easter Sunday.
At approximately 5:50 AM, police received a report indicating that a woman had stopped breathing near Barkly Homestead.
As of Tuesday morning, the woman had not yet been formally identified, and no charges have been filed.
According to the NT Police, the woman was traveling on the Barkly Highway in the Avon Downs area when the vehicle she was in reportedly collided with a kangaroo.
Authorities confirmed that she died at the scene, and the incident is being treated with suspicion. A 33-year-old man was taken into custody and transported to Tennant Creek, where he is cooperating with the investigation.
The investigation is still active, and police are appealing to the community for any additional information.
In related news, road safety continues to be a pressing concern in the Northern Territory, particularly highlighted by the recent crash in Barkly, which is among five fatalities recorded this year.
Craig Garraway from St John Ambulance NT reported that emergency crews were extremely busy over the Easter long weekend, transporting eight individuals to hospitals due to seven separate vehicle accidents across the territory.
In an interview with ABC Radio Darwin on Tuesday, Garraway noted that the service reached its operational limit from late Thursday through Good Friday, stating, “We simply did not have the resources to meet demand.”
This high level of activity persisted throughout the weekend, especially in Darwin, he added.
The incident in Avon Downs marks the second road-related death during the Easter holiday, following a separate crash in which a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old struck a tree approximately 16 kilometers north of Katherine on Saturday night.
In light of recent events, road users in the Top End are urged to remain vigilant and drive according to road conditions, with NT Police reminding everyone, “Drive like your life is worth living.”
