In response to a violent incident during a religious procession that led to unrest and demonstrations in the Goregaon region of Mumbai, local authorities took action on Monday by demolishing structures deemed illegal and associated with the individuals involved.
This decision followed a confrontation that occurred in Santosh Nagar, Goregaon (East) on Sunday during a Mariamma Devi festival. Allegations arose that members of a family disrupted a DJ setup playing devotional music and assaulted two young attendees, inciting tensions within the community.
The Dindoshi Police arrested nine family members on various charges, including attempted murder and rioting. Two individuals who sustained injuries in the altercation are currently receiving treatment at a trauma hospital in Jogeshwari.
Officials reported that the situation deteriorated quickly, necessitating the use of non-lethal measures by police as crowds resisted dispersal. Tensions flared again late Sunday night, with groups assembling to protest, further escalating through Monday morning.
Kirit Somaiya, a senior leader from the BJP, visited the area, offered prayers at a nearby temple, and recited the Hanuman Chalisa in light of the charged environment.
To ensure public safety, approximately 400 police officers were stationed in the locality. High-ranking officials, including DCP Mahesh Chimte and Additional Commissioner Paramjit Singh Dahiya, remained on-site for several hours to oversee the developments.
The demolition of the alleged illegal structures, which included a paan shop and other encroachments, was conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). A senior officer stated, “The structures were removed as part of civic action due to encroachment on public property.”
During a follow-up raid at the suspects’ home, police reportedly discovered mephedrone, prompting the initiation of an additional case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Senior Inspector Mahendra Shinde confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
A representative from the BMC’s P/East ward indicated that the operation targeted two temporary sheds and the paan shop, stating, “The demolition was part of our routine enforcement following police complaints about unauthorized constructions. We deployed around 15 to 20 staff members, along with machinery, to carry out the demolition.”
In the aftermath, police have established a camp in the area and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify other individuals who may have been involved. An officer confirmed, “The situation is currently stable, and measures are being taken to uphold peace.”
