Violence Erupts in Odisha as Tribal Demonstration Against Sijimali Bauxite Mine Leaves 40 Police Officers Injured

Approximately 50 individuals, including 40 members of the security forces, sustained injuries during a clash with tribal groups in Rayagada district, Odisha, on Tuesday. This confrontation arose over the development of a roadway leading to the Sijimali bauxite mine, as reported by the news agency PTI.

According to police reports, the demonstrators resorted to violence, using stones, swords, axes, and other sharp objects to resist the ongoing road construction efforts.

Residents of the Kashipur region have expressed strong opposition to the Sijimali bauxite mining initiative ever since the state administration transferred the project to a private entity.

The tribes have firmly opposed the roadway construction in Shagabari village, located within the Kashipur block of Rayagada district.

Police officials indicated that among the 40 injured officers, 10 suffered head injuries and were subsequently admitted to the district hospital in Rayagada. ADG Sanjay Kumar mentioned that the protestors hurled stones and bricks at the police as they attempted to mediate the situation.
