UK authorities prohibit Kanye West from traveling to the nation.

The artist known previously as Kanye West has been prohibited from entering the United Kingdom amid escalating political tensions regarding his past antisemitic comments.

Legally referred to as Ye, he submitted a request for entry to the UK through an Electronic Travel Authorisation on Monday, which was subsequently denied by authorities.

It has been reported that while his application was initially approved, it was later revoked following a review, with officials citing concerns that his presence would not serve the public interest.

Ye was scheduled to perform at the Wireless festival in London this July.

He has faced backlash for his antisemitic statements, including expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler. Last year, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoted a T-shirt featuring a swastika on his website.

In January, Ye took out a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal to apologize for his antisemitic actions, attributing his controversial behavior to his bipolar disorder. Recently, he expressed a willingness to “meet and listen” to members of the Jewish community in the UK.

Over the weekend, Keir Starmer criticized the festival’s decision to book Ye, labeling it “deeply concerning” given his history of antisemitic remarks and glorification of Nazism.

On Monday evening, Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, which organizes the Wireless festival, stated that Ye “intended to come and perform,” emphasizing that the event would not provide him a platform to express controversial views but rather to perform his songs that are popular on UK radio and streaming services.

On Tuesday afternoon, Downing Street faced inquiries regarding Ye’s potential performance. When asked about his visa status, the prime minister’s spokesperson indicated that “his permission to enter the UK is under review.” The spokesperson added, “Decisions are made on an individual basis according to the law and available evidence, but the government will not hesitate to act against individuals posing a risk to public safety or promoting extremism, including denying entry to extremist speakers and far-right individuals.”

Before the ban was announced, Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, stated that the organization would be open to meeting Ye if he withdrew from the Wireless festival lineup.

“It has been less than a year since Kanye West released a song titled ‘Heil Hitler’, representing three years of alarming antisemitism. He has also made several deeply hurtful comments regarding the Black community, suggesting that four centuries of slavery was ‘like a choice’,” Rosenberg remarked. “Even while expressing regret, his recent album includes a track with the distressing title ‘Gas Chamber’, first released last year.”
