Authorities apprehend global baby trafficking ring in Indonesia.

A man along with 18 women has been charged with human trafficking offenses in Indonesia. This group is alleged to have engaged in the illegal acquisition and sale of newborns for profit, both domestically and internationally.

Should they be convicted, the accused face potential prison sentences of up to 15 years. The Indonesian police have brought charges against these 19 individuals in connection with an international baby trafficking operation that reportedly sold infants, some as young as three months old, to buyers in Singapore as well as within Indonesia.

The court proceedings took place on Tuesday at the Bandung district court in West Java, where the man and the 18 women were formally charged. Authorities claim that the syndicate began its activities in 2023 and is believed to have trafficked at least 14 infants to Singapore.

In addition to international sales, some children were allegedly sold to adoptive parents within Jakarta. Law enforcement officials successfully rescued several infants that were in the custody of the syndicate before they could be sold.

The arrests of the defendants, including the alleged leader Lie Siu Luan, came after a parent reported a suspected kidnapping to the police in West Java. Investigators assert that this individual had previously made an arrangement with the trafficking group but did not receive any payment.

Authorities were able to locate a suspect who purportedly admitted to having trafficked over 24 infants, many of whom were only three months old. The accused are believed to have fulfilled various roles in the operation, such as locating the infants, caring for them, and creating necessary identity documents and passports.

One of the women implicated in the trafficking later informed prosecutors that she had facilitated the procurement of 34 children for the organization. Under Indonesian law, those found guilty of such crimes could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The babies were reportedly obtained from individuals who were either unwilling or unable to care for them. It is important to note that in Indonesia, which has a predominantly Muslim population, abortion is prohibited except in specific circumstances such as cases of rape or medical necessity.
