A woman is suspected of murdering her two-year-old daughter in Surya Vihar, Gurgaon, on Monday, before attempting to take her own life, according to police reports released on Tuesday.
The situation unfolded when the child’s father returned home from work on Monday evening to find their rented apartment’s door locked from the inside. Concerned, he forced the door open with assistance from neighbors. Upon entering, he discovered his daughter, Anika, unconscious on the bed, while his wife, Neha, was found nearby with a neck wound, as detailed by law enforcement officials.
Both individuals were promptly transported to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10, where medical personnel pronounced the child dead. Neha was admitted in critical condition, as noted by police authorities.
A murder charge has been filed against Neha at the Sector 9A police station. According to her husband, who is employed at a private firm in Gurgaon, the couple had been experiencing domestic disputes recently, leading investigators to speculate that she may have acted out of anger in the alleged incident, as stated by ASI Sandeep Kumar, a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police.
The woman is currently receiving treatment at the hospital, and authorities indicated that she would be taken into custody once she has recovered sufficiently for discharge. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Police sources mentioned that initial indications suggest the child may have been poisoned, and they are awaiting an autopsy report for further clarification.
The couple, originally from Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, had been married for five years and relocated to Gurgaon earlier this year.
This incident echoes a similar case from November 2021, when a 32-year-old woman allegedly killed her three-year-old daughter and then attempted suicide in Ganpati Nagar, near Sector 10 in Gurgaon. In that instance, police reported that the woman was arrested after her hospitalization. She reportedly confessed to having committed the act in a “fit of rage” but later expressed remorse.
In the earlier case, the woman’s husband returned home around midnight to find the door unanswered. After gaining entry, he discovered his wife with a self-inflicted wrist injury and his daughter lifeless on the bed. The husband had noted that his wife struggled with anger management issues.
