Police Report: UP Essential Corridor Teams Prevented 450 Fatalities in First Quarter

The Uttar Pradesh Police have effectively saved over 450 lives in traffic incidents throughout the state in the past three months, thanks to the Critical Corridor (CC) police teams equipped with essential tools and strategically stationed in high-risk areas, according to official reports.

The initiative to deploy these CC teams, which are trained to manage road accidents, was conceived by Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna. He introduced the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) initiative aimed at systematically reducing road accidents within the jurisdictions of designated police stations. This program began on January 1 of this year, targeting accident-prone roadways identified across 487 police stations within all seven Police Commissionerates and 68 districts in the state.

A comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was established by the DGP, leading to the formation of 573 CC teams in the designated regions. These teams were outfitted with advanced electronic enforcement tools, including speed laser guns, breath analyzers, and decibel meters. Their primary responsibilities include pinpointing the most hazardous routes in their areas and executing long-term safety measures alongside effective enforcement strategies, as reported by the police.

DGP Krishna emphasized the urgency of reducing fatalities from road accidents, stating that this objective is a critical priority. The systematic application of the SOP through trained police personnel in the field and continuous monitoring at the headquarters level is central to this effort. “Our main aim is to save lives in road and other accidents, which aligns with the directives from the Chief Minister,” he conveyed to The Indian Express.

A recent quarterly assessment of the ZFD initiative revealed a 7.43% decrease in accidents, an 11.55% drop in fatalities, and an 8.05% reduction in injuries compared to 2025. The state comprises 88 units across 68 districts and seven commissionerates, organized into 20 zones, according to police data.

Of the 88 units, 51 have reported a decline in accidents, while five have remained stable, placing 56 units (63.6%) in the favorable category. Regarding fatalities, 60 units experienced a decrease, and six units showed no increase, resulting in 66 units (75%) in the positive zone, the police noted.

Out of 18 police ranges in the state, 13 and 6 of 8 zones witnessed reductions in both accidents and fatalities. Moreover, 5 out of the 7 Police Commissionerates also reported declines in these metrics, according to police officials.

A.D.G. of the Traffic Directorate, A. Satish Ganesh, stated that the primary approach of the ZFD initiative is “Focused Intervention,” which emphasizes intensified efforts in areas with elevated accident rates.

In the first quarter of the year, approximately 450 deaths due to accidents were prevented, along with a reduction of 506 accidents, averaging about 5.62 fewer accidents per day, according to police reports.

Police stations that require additional focus are continuously being identified based on scientific assessments. Officers in charge of CC teams are regularly updated through video conferences held at the Traffic Directorate level.

To enhance accident prevention and ensure thorough and scientific investigations of road incidents, the Traffic Directorate has conducted two training sessions in collaboration with experts from IRTE and CTM. The training included 7 DCPs, 5 ASPs, 48 Deputy SPs, 73 Inspectors/Sub-Inspectors (Traffic), and 73 Sub-Inspectors (Civil Police).

Following directives from the DGP, serious road accidents resulting in three or more fatalities have been classified as Special Report (SR) cases, a status that was not previously assigned to fatal road incidents.

The state government has also allocated funds for modernization initiatives and road safety plans, which include the acquisition of four and two-wheeler interceptors, traffic safety equipment (such as iron and folding barriers, safety helmets, fluorescent jackets, and breath analyzers), and the installation of CCTV cameras. These measures further bolster the ZFD initiative, according to official sources.

The SOP issued by the DGP emphasizes monitoring for overspeeding, drunk driving, reckless driving or stunt biking, noise pollution, and visibly polluting vehicles.
