The Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has faced significant backlash from numerous players; however, Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has expressed that it has been beneficial in offering opportunities to younger athletes. He recognized that while this rule tends to favor batters and reduce the importance of all-rounders, it has also increased the likelihood of younger players being selected.
“As a young player, I view the Impact Sub rule as a tremendous chance for newcomers, and I have reiterated this multiple times. Many players are critical of it because it allows teams to make riskier choices by introducing an additional player, whether a batter or a bowler,” Prabhsimran shared with the media.
“For young players, this rule is crucial. When I first joined the Punjab Kings, I spent eight years with the franchise, and for four of those years, I had limited playing time. While waiting on the bench, I always yearned for an opportunity, and now, thanks to the Impact Sub rule, I believe that the prospects for young talent have significantly improved,” added the promising top-order batsman, who amassed over 500 runs in the previous IPL season.
Sameer Rizvi’s emergence as a standout player for Delhi Capitals serves as a prime example of how the Impact Player rule has allowed younger talents to shine. Additionally, lesser-known players like Ashutosh Sharma have made their mark after stepping in as Impact Player substitutes last season.
Conversely, many established players, including MS Dhoni and Shubman Gill, have expressed their concerns about the rule, stating that it encourages riskier play and leads to inflated scoring. Meanwhile, Graeme Smith, the former South African captain and current commissioner of the SA20 league, announced that the tournament would not adopt this rule to preserve simplicity. He mentioned, “We decided to avoid it at this initial stage of the Betway SA20 because we aim to attract a new audience to the sport, and complicating an already intricate game for newcomers is not desirable,” he noted in a column for Betway Insider.
