Abhishek Banerjee hails Chetak Screen Awards triumph for Stolen as a significant achievement for indie filmmakers: ‘I never expected it to be recognized’

On April 5, during the Chetak Screen Awards, the film Stolen, featuring Abhishek Banerjee, stood out as a top contender in the OTT category, clinching four prestigious awards: Best OTT Film, Best Director for Karan Tejpal, Best Actor (Male) for Banerjee, and Best Script. For Banerjee, the accolades represent more than mere recognition; they signify a triumph for independent filmmaking fueled by passion, often amid uncertainty regarding its outcomes.

In his reflections on the achievement, Abhishek Banerjee shared with SCREEN: “There is a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from dedicating yourself to a project without any guarantees about the future. This level of commitment showcases the pure passion one can invest in any endeavor. When involved in a mainstream Bollywood project, there is a clear expectation of release, whether in theaters or on OTT platforms. However, with a film like Stolen, you cannot be sure if it will ever be showcased.”

He continued, “You become part of a process guided by instinct and trust in individuals you’ve never met before. The journey of collaborating with unfamiliar faces, forming lasting friendships, and achieving success at one of the most esteemed award ceremonies is a significant achievement for all independent creators. It serves as inspiration for young filmmakers, demonstrating that regardless of your background, a well-crafted film can bring the recognition and acclaim it deserves.”

In addition, Abhishek Banerjee discussed his adaptability across different genres. From evoking laughter as Jaana in Stree to delivering a chilling performance as Vishal Tyagi in Pataal Lok, and portraying a deeply emotional character in Stolen, he has showcased his range. While he humorously remarked, “I have multiple personality disorder,” he elaborated, “I believe that we all possess various traits within us. We may not express them in our everyday lives, but as actors, we are trained to bring these emotions to the forefront through our craft. It’s not about extraordinary talent; it’s the result of years of dedicated practice that shapes one into a proficient actor.”
