The Iran conflict serves as a crucial reminder: the UK must strengthen its resilience both domestically and with European partners, asserts Keir Starmer.

For nearly twenty years, the United Kingdom has navigated a series of crises. From the financial meltdown of 2008 to austerity measures, Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine, and the brief premiership of Liz Truss, the typical response from Westminster has been consistent: manage the immediate issues, apply temporary solutions, and strive to restore the previous order.

However, the current situation demands a different approach. The ongoing conflict in Iran marks a pivotal moment, as the outcomes of this crisis will significantly influence the nation for generations to come. Rather than yearning for a return to the circumstances of 2008, it is essential to carve out a new trajectory for Britain—one that enhances our energy independence, fortifies our defense, and ensures economic security in a transformed global landscape. The world today is markedly more unstable and perilous than it has been in recent history, presenting continual challenges to our national security. Historically, Britain has not always risen to meet these challenges effectively.

This understanding of resilience has been central to my government’s strategy—not only in response to the crisis in Iran but also in safeguarding our national interests domestically. Throughout this conflict, I have adhered to the belief that Britain’s interests are best protected through diplomacy, de-escalation, and the prompt reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. From the beginning, I made it clear that Britain would refrain from engaging in offensive military operations, a commitment we maintained. However, when Iran acted aggressively towards its neighbors, we responded appropriately by intercepting drones, downing missiles, and safeguarding British lives and interests, while also supporting our allies who are similarly averse to conflict.

This practical approach focuses on reducing tensions rather than exacerbating them. We collaborate with allies rather than acting in isolation, and we prioritize our security while ensuring economic stability. In today’s unpredictable world, this strategy is essential for protecting British interests, and it extends to our domestic policies as well.

The challenges faced by citizens in their everyday lives are interconnected with global events. The same instability that jeopardizes international security also elevates energy costs, disrupts supply chains, and strains household budgets in Britain.

Consequently, alongside our regional initiatives, we have implemented measures such as capping energy bills and making substantial investments in domestic energy production to liberate ourselves from foreign influences on gas prices. Additionally, while maintaining our distance from the conflict, we have reinforced our European partnerships and enhanced our defense capabilities with the most significant investment since the Cold War. Furthermore, while stabilizing public finances, we have introduced a forward-thinking industrial strategy, bolstered workers’ rights, and initiated a new child poverty strategy aimed at lifting over half a million children out of poverty.

These actions are not merely reactive; they represent a commitment to a transformative approach that prioritizes long-term planning and prepares Britain for a future where such shocks are increasingly common. Resilience empowers us to maintain control over our destiny; without it, we risk being swayed by external events. With resilience, we can proactively shape our future and fulfill the needs of working individuals.

This is the foundation for creating a more equitable society—one where citizens are not at the mercy of international dynamics and where opportunities abound. We must be robust—both economically and strategically—so that we can not only safeguard but also enhance living standards in an unpredictable environment. Our goal is to act not merely to endure current challenges but to fortify Britain against the trials that lie ahead. This entails investing in the resources that will allow us to steer our future: secure, indigenous energy; strong alliances and credible defense capabilities; and an economy characterized by stability and sustainable growth. We will continue to support families now while laying the groundwork for greater resilience in the future.

We will not dwell on the past nor attempt to recreate a bygone world. Instead, we will strive to construct a Britain that is stronger, more secure, and more resilient. This is the imperative of our time, and Britain will remain steadfast in its course.

Keir Starmer is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
