On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump firmly rejected allegations of any connection to the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, labeling the accusations as defamatory. In an uncommon statement delivered from the White House, she declared, “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today.”
Melania Trump asserted that she had no relationship with Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, with whom she maintained only a casual acquaintance. “I have never been friends with Epstein. Donald and I occasionally attended the same parties as Epstein, as it is common to overlap in social circles in New York City,” she explained. “To clarify, I never had a relationship with Epstein or his accomplice, Maxwell.”
The situation poses a political challenge for President Trump, who has previously fueled conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein during his time out of office. Since his return to the White House, Epstein’s case has emerged as an ongoing political concern for the president.
Investigations in several legal matters have revealed Epstein’s connections to numerous influential individuals across politics, finance, and business, both prior to and after his guilty plea in 2008 on prostitution charges, including the solicitation of a minor.
Epstein was apprehended once more in 2019 on federal charges related to the sex trafficking of minors. His death in a Manhattan jail cell that same year was ruled a suicide.
Documents released by the Justice Department include a 2002 email from Melania Trump to Maxwell regarding a magazine article on Epstein, in which she complimented Maxwell, stating, “You look great.”
Melania Trump emphasized on Thursday, “I am not Epstein’s victim,” and urged Congress to conduct a public hearing focusing on women who were victimized by Epstein.
Donald Trump has maintained that his association with Epstein concluded in the mid-2000s and that he was unaware of Epstein’s abusive behavior. Previously disclosed records indicate that Trump traveled on Epstein’s plane several times during the 1990s, a claim he has denied.
Following the initial allegations against Epstein, Trump reportedly contacted the police chief in Palm Beach to indicate that “everyone has known he’s been doing this,” according to an FBI interview record.
