Exploring the Common Ground Between Humanists and Christians | Letters

Andrew Copson’s recent letter, titled “There is no revival of Christianity in Britain,” sparked my interest. However, his assertion that there exists a fundamental divide between humanists and Christians seems to be a misconception.

Copson states that meaning is sought not through dogma but through humanist principles such as reason, kindness, and personal responsibility. This sentiment is, in fact, shared by many individuals who identify as Christians. The essence of personal responsibility is central to the teachings of Christ. It is noteworthy that many humanists embody these values and, in some instances, may demonstrate a level of kindness that surpasses that of certain Christians.

The perspectives of young people aged 16 to 34 in Britain offer a glimmer of hope. Many of them resonate with the teachings of Jesus as articulated in the Sermon on the Mount, regardless of whether they identify as religious.

Sam Morris from Cambridge raises an interesting point regarding the six out of ten young people who classify themselves as non-religious. It would be pertinent for Copson to consider how frequently these individuals attend Humanist UK meetings and to question the origins of the values they espouse, as these principles did not emerge from a void.

It was disheartening to read about Copson’s perceived neglect of the non-religious community. I, along with those in my circles, do not align with such a view. As an Anglican Christian with a graduate diploma in theology, ministry, and mission, my faith is not merely a rigid adherence to dogma, as he implies. Instead, I find that my beliefs are closely aligned with the values he advocates, which are also at the core of traditional Church of England Christianity. I believe that through dialogue, we would discover more shared beliefs than he might expect.

Furthermore, I recognize the community he represents as an equally valid part of the public discourse on ethics, and I hope he acknowledges the respect I extend towards him and his beliefs.
