Alex de Minaur, Australia’s top-ranked tennis player, has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters after defeating Alexander Blockx. This victory sets the stage for a match against local favorite Valentin Vacherot, the sole Monégasque player on the tour, who is poised to break into the top 20 of the ATP rankings following his impressive performances.
Should de Minaur reach the semifinals for a second consecutive year, he could potentially face world number one Carlos Alcaraz. De Minaur’s journey to the quarterfinals marks a significant comeback after experiencing early exits at Indian Wells and Miami.
In his recent match, de Minaur faced a tough challenge against the emerging talent Blockx, who celebrated his 21st birthday just a day prior after defeating the 10th seed, Flavio Cobolli. De Minaur ultimately triumphed with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) in a tightly contested match that lasted one hour and 47 minutes.
The Australian expressed relief at rebounding from his recent setbacks in the United States, stating, “It was unfortunate to lose early in the States, because I was actually quite happy with my level and thought I hopefully could go deep. But these things happen, and ultimately, I’m happy I’ve bounced back here on the clay. Hopefully, it’s the start of a good clay swing.”
During the match, Blockx initially surged to a 4-2 lead, prompting de Minaur to secure crucial breaks to clinch the first set. The second set remained competitive with neither player able to break serve, but de Minaur’s aggressive play in the tiebreak, where he recorded 21 winners, helped him seal the victory.
In the upcoming quarterfinals, de Minaur will face Vacherot, who has been on a remarkable ascent since his victory at the Shanghai Masters last October as a qualifier. Vacherot’s rise has included defeating top-ranked players, including a win against world number five Lorenzo Musetti in the previous round.
Despite the pressure of defending semifinal points, de Minaur remains optimistic, saying, “It’s still the first week of the clay and there are things I would love to do a little bit better, but, hey, I’m in the quarterfinals, and I’m excited for the battle.”
The quarterfinals promise to be thrilling, with other notable players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner also in contention for the world number one ranking. If both de Minaur and Alcaraz win their respective matches, they will meet in the semifinals. Additionally, Brazilian player Joao Fonseca will compete in his first Masters quarterfinal against third seed Alexander Zverev, while Felix Auger-Aliassime faces Sinner.
Although Sinner’s record streak of 37 consecutive sets won at Masters 1000 events came to an end, he continues to maintain his winning momentum, having defeated Czech player Tomáš Macháč 6-1, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 to reach the last eight.
