Andy Robertson will conclude his distinguished career at Liverpool at the end of the current season, as officially announced by the club.
The 32-year-old full-back’s contract expires this summer, and he will join fellow notable player Mohamed Salah in departing Anfield on a free transfer. Several clubs, including Napoli, Juventus, Atlético Madrid, and Tottenham, have expressed interest in acquiring the Scotland international, who turned down a move to Atlético last summer.
Robertson made the switch to Liverpool from Hull City for £8 million in 2017 and quickly became one of the club’s most celebrated defenders. Throughout his tenure, he has played 373 matches and achieved numerous accolades, including two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Club World Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup.
This season, Robertson has seen his starting position taken by Milos Kerkez, leading him to determine that it is time to seek new opportunities. “Leaving a club like Liverpool is never a simple decision,” he remarked. “This club has been an integral part of my life and my family’s for the past nine years.”
He added, “I’ve had chances to leave in the last year, but I chose to stay due to the difficulty of departing from this club, and I wouldn’t change that for anything. However, I recognize that football evolves, and I feel it’s the right moment for me to move on to the next chapter of my career.”
Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, Robertson expressed gratitude for the memories he created. “I’ve poured my heart and soul into this club for nine years and have few regrets. I’ve matured as both a player and a person, and this club and its fans will always hold a special place in my heart. It has been an incredible journey.”
Robertson’s career began after being released by Celtic at age 15, leading him to join Queen’s Park for the 2012-13 season. Youth coaches advised him to transition to left-back, where he secured a first-team spot while also working part-time at a Marks & Spencer in Glasgow.
His impressive performances caught the attention of Dundee United, where he signed in June 2013. There, he helped the team finish fourth in the Premiership and reach the Scottish Cup final, where they were runners-up to St Johnstone. Robertson earned the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award and made his Scotland debut against Poland in March 2014.
At just 20 years old, he signed a three-year deal with Hull City but couldn’t prevent the team’s relegation in his first year. Hull quickly returned to the Premier League, with Robertson making 52 appearances in the 2015-16 season, attracting the interest of Everton, who ultimately declined a £20 million double deal.
In July 2017, Jürgen Klopp brought Robertson to Liverpool for £8 million, where he formed a formidable partnership with Trent Alexander-Arnold. He played the entire match in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid and was appointed Scotland captain by Alex McLeish in September.
In January 2019, he extended his contract with Liverpool and played a pivotal role in securing the club’s sixth European title by defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the final. The following season, Klopp’s squad clinched the Premier League title during the disrupted 2019-20 season, and Robertson led Scotland to qualification for Euro 2020.
After Scotland’s disappointing performance at the Euro 2020 finals, Robertson signed a five-year extension with Liverpool in August 2021. He contributed to FA and League Cup victories through penalty shootout wins over Chelsea but fell short in both the league and Champions League finals against Real Madrid.
By December 2022, Robertson became the all-time leading defender for assists in Premier League history, reaching 54. He captained Liverpool against Wolves in September 2023 and successfully led Scotland to qualification for Euro 2024 a month later. In January 2024, Klopp announced Robertson’s impending departure from Anfield at the season’s end.
Scotland was unable to advance past the group stage at Euro 2024, and Arne Slot’s appointment as Liverpool manager indicated a shift towards a more defensive strategy for full-backs. Slot led Liverpool to a Premier League title in his first year, with Robertson making 45 appearances across competitions.
In November 2025, Robertson captained Scotland to a World Cup qualification victory over Denmark. At the club level, he faced competition for the left-back position from Milos Kerkez and scored against Atlético in the Champions League. In April 2026, he confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool after nearly nine years.
Robertson has become a beloved figure at Liverpool and remains a significant presence in the locker room. There are currently no indications that he plans to return to club football in Scotland.
In a statement, Liverpool praised Robertson as “a true Liverpool legend” who has played a crucial role in the club’s recent successes through his 373 appearances. The club emphasized that any celebration of his legacy will be postponed until after the conclusion of the current season, with Robertson fully committed to helping the team finish the 2025-26 campaign on a high note.
