“Aamir Khan Reflects on Self-Doubt After Watching Son Junaid’s Adaptation of Laal Singh Chaddha”

Aamir Khan has frequently expressed his disappointment regarding the box office results of his 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha, which is an adaptation of the acclaimed Tom Hanks movie, Forrest Gump. This project held significant personal importance for him, yet it failed to resonate with audiences, profoundly impacting the actor. Following the film’s release, he decided to take a hiatus from acting before making his return in 2025 with Sitaare Zameen Par.

In a recent interview with JioHotstar, Aamir disclosed that he had initially envisioned his son, Junaid Khan, in the lead role of the film. Aamir shared that upon Junaid’s return from his acting studies in Los Angeles, he was eager to witness his son’s growth as an actor. To evaluate his skills, Aamir opted to conduct a test as a director.

Reflecting on the film’s development, Aamir stated, “I was captivated by the script of Forrest Gump and was filled with excitement. At that time, Junaid had just finished his acting course in LA, and I was curious to see how much he had learned.”

He requested director Advait Chandan to film several scenes featuring Junaid, aiming not only to assess his son’s capabilities but also to evaluate Advait’s potential to manage a project of this magnitude, as his previous work, Secret Superstar, was on a different scale. “I instructed Advait to take 7-8 scenes from Laal Singh Chaddha and shoot them with Junaid. I wanted to see what Junaid had absorbed, but the real assessment was for you, Advait, to show me if you could direct a film of this scale,” he explained.

Advait filmed approximately 20 minutes of scenes, including two or three challenging ones. Aamir admitted that he was taken aback by Junaid’s performance at first, questioning whether his admiration stemmed from a father’s bias. To gain clarity, he sought feedback from those close to him. “I asked Kiran if my opinion was clouded by fatherly affection, and she assured me that he was indeed talented,” Aamir recounted.

After screening the footage for his family and some industry colleagues, Aamir received positive feedback. “I shared it with my family, including Mansoor, who advised me to cast Junaid in the role of Laal. I also consulted others in the industry, and nearly everyone echoed that he was perfect for the part,” he noted.

By this point, Aamir was convinced of Junaid’s suitability for the role. “I was confident that Junaid should portray Laal Singh Chaddha because he performed exceptionally well,” he asserted.

However, Aamir acknowledged the emotional complexity of the situation as he grappled with the realization that Junaid’s performance had set a high bar for him as an actor. “Truthfully, watching Junaid perform made me feel that he embodied Laal. I questioned how I could step into that role,” he admitted.

Even after deciding to take on the role himself, Aamir mentioned that Junaid’s portrayal lingered in his thoughts. “The reality is, as I prepared for the film, I found myself reflecting on how Junaid would have approached it, which may have influenced my own performance,” he stated.

Aamir expressed his desire to cast Junaid based solely on merit. “As a father, I genuinely wanted to give him the opportunity based on his talent, not on my own status,” he explained.

Despite his strong belief in Junaid’s capabilities, the final decision did not favor him. Aamir revealed that concerns from the studio significantly influenced the outcome, with the head of the LA studio, Jim, expressing hesitation about casting Junaid. “Ultimately, we did not proceed with Junaid for various reasons. One significant factor was Jim’s uncertainty; he seemed to think I was trying to favor my son. He mentioned that we had a deal for me as the lead and preferred to maintain that arrangement,” Aamir shared.

Being someone who values respect in professional matters, Aamir decided to honor the studio’s wishes. “I am not the type to push for my decisions, especially when it involves family. Therefore, I respected their choice,” he concluded.

Prior to the film’s release, Aamir conveyed in an interview with TV9 that the character required an inherent innocence that Junaid possessed. However, he cited different reasons for not casting him, stating, “Aditya Chopra and Atul Kulkarni, the film’s writer, raised objections. They insisted that I take on the role, arguing that the episodic nature of Forrest Gump necessitated a star, as a newcomer might not successfully carry the film. I eventually accepted their reasoning, understanding that sometimes talent alone is not enough if the timing isn’t right.”

Laal Singh Chaddha, co-written by Atul Kulkarni, featured notable actors such as Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh, Manav Vij, and Naga Chaitanya. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Paramount Pictures, and Viacom18 Studios, the film grossed approximately Rs 130 crore worldwide against a production budget of Rs 200 crore.
