Rashmika Mandanna celebrated her milestone 30th birthday in her native Coorg, surrounded by loved ones. She donned a beautiful blush pink Kodava sari that was not only visually striking but also rich in cultural significance. Reflecting on her special day, she shared a post on Instagram stating, “My 30th birthday was kinda different this time,” alongside moments from her visit to a local temple, her former school, and gatherings with friends and family who were unable to attend her wedding to fellow actor Vijay Deverakonda earlier this year.
Mandanna accessorized her outfit with elegant gold jewelry, including layered necklaces, matching earrings, and bangles, completing her look with a small black bindi and a bun adorned with a floral wreath. However, her sari was uniquely styled, featuring the traditional Coorgi drape, which has roots in martial history.
The Kodavas, the warrior community to which Mandanna belongs, designed this traditional sari to allow for practical movement while retaining style. With its inverted pleats and pallu drawn from back to front, the attire offers versatility, suitable for both daily tasks and festive occasions.
Costume designer Shilpa GNS noted that Mandanna’s choice to wear this cultural attire was a meaningful homage to her heritage and personal history. She elaborated on the significance of the Kodava sari, highlighting its deep connection to the essence of Coorg and its people. “It is more than just clothing — it is a legacy. It embodies the tranquility of Coorg’s landscapes, the cadence of its hills, and the dignity of a community shaped by its environment and values,” Shilpa explained to indianexpress.com.
She further described the distinctive features of the sari, with pleats gathered at the back and the pallu styled in a unique manner, noting that these characteristics originated from the experiences of Kodava women. “What began as functional became an expression of elegance; what facilitated movement evolved into a symbol of identity,” Shilpa remarked. The traditional Kodava attire is typically complemented by a fitted blouse and, during ceremonial occasions, includes a headpiece known as vastra.
This cultural richness contributed to the powerful resonance of Mandanna’s appearance. By adopting the Kodava style, she was not merely wearing fabric; she was embodying her heritage. According to Shilpa, the sari transcended mere clothing, representing a visible connection to belonging, grounded, composed, and deeply intertwined with her roots.
