Arne Slot has acknowledged that last season’s championship victory merely postponed the conclusion of an era at Liverpool, emphasizing that the club recognized the necessity for a rebuilding phase when he was appointed as the successor to Jürgen Klopp.
This summer will see the departure of two more figures linked to Klopp’s tenure, with Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah set to leave on free transfers. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, and Joe Gomez, the remaining members of the squad that achieved Premier League and Champions League glory under Klopp, will soon enter the final years of their contracts.
Slot faces significant pressure following a disappointing season that has resulted in 16 defeats, a statistic he admits is unacceptable. Nonetheless, he maintains that he and the club’s leadership, including sporting director Richard Hughes and the ownership group Fenway Sports Group, are united in their understanding of the challenges ahead, particularly the transitional phase following Klopp’s departure. He believes that the turbulence associated with such transitions was temporarily alleviated by last season’s title win.
“This is a shared understanding we had not just recently, but a year and a half ago,” Slot stated regarding the necessity to manage the dissolution of a successful Liverpool team. “In football, cycles are a natural occurrence. I am pleased that Mo and Robbo have collaborated with all the new signings from last summer, as they have gained insight into the club’s values and the level of effort required. This is a typical process for successful organizations, or any club for that matter, where a cycle eventually concludes. This is not unfamiliar to us, and fortunately, we may have delayed that cycle with last season’s success.”
Slot expressed that he continues to feel supported by Hughes, Michael Edwards, the chief football executive at FSG, and intriguingly, from the Liverpool supporters, despite the challenging run of results.
He remarked, “Support isn’t always about daily affirmations of ‘We support you.’ It involves discussing our observations of the situation. Sometimes, it’s not necessary to verbally express support, as you can feel it. I have sensed that support since my arrival here.”
“While I cannot disclose our private conversations, I believe we share a common perspective—ownership, Richard, Michael, and everyone involved. We all recognize the circumstances unfolding before us, and we are unified in our observations and the underlying reasons.”
