Kunal Kamra Declines to Apologize to Maharashtra Committee for Eknath Shinde Satire, Citing Concerns Over Precedent

On Thursday, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra refused to apologize to a privileges committee of the Maharashtra legislature for his comments directed at Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, asserting that any apology offered would lack authenticity. With a substantial social media following exceeding 7 million, Kamra emphasized that providing such an apology could set a dangerous precedent detrimental to the freedom of expression for other artists.

The dispute originates from Kamra’s satirical song parody titled ‘Thane ki Rickshaw,’ which many perceived as a critique of Shinde’s background as an auto-rickshaw driver in Thane prior to his political career. This performance led to significant political outcry, culminating in a breach of privilege motion in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

Kamra attended a session of the Vidhan Bhavan Privileges Committee on Thursday to present his account. Committee Chairman Prasad Lad indicated that the complaint was lodged by BJP MLC Pravin Darekar.

“Today marked Kunal Kamra’s third or fourth hearing. We needed to document his testimony. Pravin Darekar had filed a complaint against him, and it was the time to conduct cross-examination. Both Kunal Kamra and Pravin Darekar were questioned. A total of twenty-four inquiries were posed to Kamra, where he attempted to clarify his perspective, referencing constitutional rights and the authority of the privileges committee,” Lad noted.

In reaction, Kamra took to social media to elaborate on his stance against issuing an apology. He posted, “Respected sir, perhaps there was a misunderstanding, but regarding the last three questions from my cross-examination today: Do you feel remorse? No. Are you sorry for your statements? No. If you offer an unconditional apology, would this matter be perceived differently? No, I cannot do that as it would not be a sincere apology. Additionally, it would create a troubling precedent for the rights of other artists.” He shared this on X.

Kamra’s comments quickly resonated with the online community, prompting various reactions. One user remarked, “Freedom of speech is only as strong as those willing to endure the discomfort of defending it,” while another characterized his replies as “Typical Kamra Style Answers.”

This controversy traces back to a performance at the Habitat Comedy Club last year, during which Kamra, through a parody of a song from ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai,’ labeled Shinde a “traitor,” referencing his 2022 rebellion that resulted in a split within the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray. This statement incited anger among Shinde’s supporters, some of whom subsequently vandalized the comedy venue.
