Kieron Pollard Reflects on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Journey: ‘I Was Still in School at 15’

Regardless of whether the Rajasthan Royals are playing, the name Vaibhav Sooryavanshi consistently emerges in discussions during press conferences, with many eager to learn about the 15-year-old’s bold batting style.

Kieron Pollard, the batting coach for Mumbai Indians and a former all-rounder, expressed his enthusiasm over Sooryavanshi’s performance in the IPL. However, he urged caution, emphasizing the need to remain supportive even during potential downturns in the young player’s form.

“At 15, I was still in school and participating in club cricket. It’s truly thrilling to witness a young talent making waves in the cricketing world. His youthful energy is a significant asset, and I hope this trend continues for him and for Indian cricket as well,” Pollard remarked.

Pollard highlighted the importance of nurturing talent, stressing the need to support Sooryavanshi. He warned against the tendency to abandon young players when they face challenges, pointing out that this can lead to overlooking their potential. “The biggest concern for me, as a cricketer, is that we often get swept up in the hype. When a player encounters obstacles, they might quickly be forgotten, which is quite unfortunate,” he added.

As the Mumbai Indians prepare to face the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pollard noted the significance of the upcoming match, featuring two cricket icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, he preferred to frame it as a team contest rather than an individual showdown.

Pollard emphasized the need to honor veteran players who have brought joy to fans over the years, allowing them to choose when to retire. He maintained that while it may be viewed as a Rohit versus Kohli match, it should be seen as the Mumbai Indians competing against RCB, with both players enjoying their careers.

“These athletes are still performing at a high level. Even if they face challenges, they deserve the right to make their own choices. I appreciate the presence of experienced players, as they can guide the upcoming talent who will become the stars of the future,” Pollard continued.

Additionally, Pollard shared his views on the Impact Player rule in the IPL, aligning himself with others who have criticized it. He indicated that the rule limits players’ ability to demonstrate certain skills on the field.

“The Impact Player rule may inhibit the development of some skills essential for international cricket. I hope they will consider its advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I am not a fan of it,” he concluded.
