The Punjab Kings continue their impressive form in the IPL, securing consecutive victories while the Sunrisers Hyderabad suffer their third loss in four matches. During their chase of 220 runs in Mullanpur, the Kings initially mirrored the performance of the Sunrisers from earlier in the day. The opening batsmen capitalized on the Powerplay but fell quickly thereafter, leading to a brief period of stagnation in scoring. However, captain Shreyas Iyer (69 not out off 33 balls) quickly turned the tide, ensuring that the team maintained its momentum.
In a pivotal two-over stretch where the short ball was tested, Iyer transformed deliveries from Harshal Patel and Eshan Malinga into a defining moment for his team. He launched a classic Harshal slower ball over deep square leg for six, igniting a flurry of runs that included 28 runs off seven balls, effectively sealing the match. Iyer’s powerful strike against Malinga, soaring 91 meters over deep mid-wicket, marked a crucial point in the chase. Punjab comfortably achieved their target with seven balls remaining, marking their second consecutive successful chase of over 200 runs. The opening partnership of Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya set the foundation with their combined score of 93 runs in the first six overs, peppering the field with 18 boundaries, thus allowing Iyer to lead his team to an unbeaten streak.
The evening’s highlight was the explosive performance during the Powerplay, which contributed nearly 45 percent of the runs scored throughout the match.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma capitalized on this phase, bouncing back from previous disappointments as a duo. Iyer’s team had learned from the Sunrisers’ last home game, where Mohammad Shami’s clever slower balls had stymied Head and Abhishek in their previous outing. Abhishek’s cautious approach following an aggressive shot hinted at a more tempered strategy.
However, two back-to-back overs yielding 24 runs each allowed the pair to maintain their aggressive style without needing to change tactics. Arshdeep Singh’s attempt to challenge his teammates was undermined by his own bowling, allowing Abhishek to rediscover his rhythm, especially after a disappointing performance in the previous match.
Abhishek’s approach against V Vysakh was nothing short of spectacular, launching a six over extra cover followed by another soaring shot over long-off. He reached his fifty in just 18 balls, culminating in a maximum that propelled the team past 100 runs in the Powerplay for the third time as a pair—an unprecedented achievement in T20 history.
PBKS assistant coach James Hopes referred to Shashank Singh as the “circuit breaker,” a player known for his exceptional wristwork. Although he had bowled only three overs in 33 matches prior to this game, he proved to be the perfect choice to slow down the pace. After the Powerplay, he dismissed Head with a clever slower ball, and later, he managed to trap Abhishek (74) at deep cover, reminiscent of a similar dismissal in 2024.
This strategic move allowed Punjab to take control of the match. A solid performance from the seamers in the final overs restricted Hyderabad to just 28 runs in the last four overs, compounding their difficulties.
