Sanju Samson conveyed a message to Stephen Fleming following his impressive unbeaten score of 115, which led the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their first victory at Chepauk in six attempts against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday.
“That celebration was for Fleming,” Samson remarked, referring to his Padayappa salute after reaching his century. “Leading a franchise for five years can be incredibly challenging, both mentally and emotionally. I wanted to dedicate this achievement to our coach.”
This century marked Samson’s inaugural one for CSK, occurring after a challenging start that included three consecutive losses. He attributed his ability to settle into the team to the franchise’s composed atmosphere. “Even after three losses in a row, we held a brief 50-second meeting today. This reflects the essence of our franchise and resonates with who I am as a person,” he explained.
CSK fans celebrated their team’s first win of the season, with the franchise, a five-time IPL champion, receiving applause for their performance.
Samson was open about his struggles with form, stating, “I have encountered numerous failures, which have taught me how to bounce back. My mind tends to wander at times, and I need to focus on the fundamentals. At 31, I have invested a significant amount of time in this sport.” He recognized the contributions of the support staff in helping him regain focus just before the match.
He also praised Ayush Mhatre, who scored 59 runs off 36 balls before being retired out. “He displayed remarkable maturity and clarity, proving that he is more than just an Under-19 player. I am very pleased with his performance.”
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad commented that the win had been anticipated. “Even in our last match here, we displayed promising signs. Today, our focus was on bowling — taking wickets in the middle overs, maintaining aggressive lengths, and keeping our strategy straightforward.”
While acknowledging the bowling attack’s limitations, he emphasized that their approach had been effective. “We may lack an X-factor in our bowling lineup, but we discussed strategies to be proactive and minimize extra boundaries. Our execution today was spot on.”
Gaikwad also highlighted the unwavering support of the Chepauk crowd. “The fans in Chennai consistently stand by us, regardless of the situation. It’s wonderful to see people enjoying cricket and supporting the franchise.”
