Recipe box services have emerged as a game-changer for busy food enthusiasts, providing a convenient alternative to traditional cooking methods. They are generally more affordable than takeout options, often contain less processed ingredients than pre-packaged meals, and offer a more adventurous culinary experience than basic staples like beans on toast.

While users still need to cook, they can forgo the grocery shopping. Most recipe boxes come equipped with all necessary ingredients, typically pre-measured. “Meal kits” further simplify the process by including pre-prepared stocks, sauces, and chopped vegetables, allowing users to quickly assemble meals by following straightforward recipe instructions—often in less time than it takes to wait in a supermarket line.
Apart from reducing reliance on takeout and instant meals, these services offer numerous advantages. The nine recipe boxes and meal kits I evaluated for this article contained high-quality, minimally processed ingredients, with recipes that struck a balance between being easy to follow, intriguing to cook, and genuinely tasty.
To explore how nine popular recipe boxes cater to various culinary preferences and skill levels, I enlisted my extended family to participate in the testing process. In this article, I will share our top picks, including a letterbox-friendly kit that rekindled my 86-year-old father’s passion for cooking and a sustainably packaged box featuring the most stunning cauliflower I have ever encountered.
Overall best recipe box: Riverford
Best budget recipe box: Gousto
Best letterbox meal kit: SimplyCook
Best recipe box for quick meals: HelloFresh
Best recipe box for healthy meals: Mindful Chef
Having spent years writing about various products, I approach manufacturers’ claims with a healthy dose of skepticism. In some respects, I am a prime candidate for meal delivery kits, as I want to cook more but lack the time. On the other hand, I have specific dietary preferences and dislike excessive packaging. For a recipe box to impress me, it must inspire culinary creativity, offer a hassle-free alternative to supermarket shopping, and minimize waste.
With nine recipe box brands to evaluate—some even sending multiple boxes—I sought help from my family to manage the volume. My relatives encompass a range of cooking styles and preferences. There’s a confident cook who doesn’t follow recipes (my sister, Maeve), a once-enthusiastic cook now leaning towards convenience (my father, Don), and a meticulous baker who adheres strictly to recipes (my husband, Alan). Both Alan and I are vegetarians, whereas Maeve and Don are not.
I began by examining the freshness and quality of the ingredients in each box while also assessing their sustainability in terms of packaging. Many companies claim to reduce food waste by providing precise ingredient amounts, but if those portions are heavily wrapped in plastic, it poses an environmental concern. I compared the plastic usage across the boxes, including ice packs, and awarded additional points for eco-friendly practices, such as compostable packaging and local sourcing. I also acknowledged brands that minimized box size and weight to lower carbon emissions associated with delivery.
Next, I assigned recipes to designated family cooks. To gather specific and consistent feedback, I created a score sheet for each cook to evaluate various aspects, including ingredient quality, clarity of recipe instructions, taste, and how closely the final dish resembled the expectations set by the recipe.
My evaluation also considered overall value, including delivery costs, recipe variety, accommodations for special diets, and the user-friendliness of the ordering process. Importantly, none of the food subscription services I reviewed required long-term contracts, allowing users to cancel at any time. I particularly appreciated flexible subscription models that offered the option for one-time orders.
Riverford began its journey from humble beginnings in a car boot and has evolved into a prominent provider of organic food, including meat, dairy, baked goods, and beverages, alongside its recipe boxes and smaller meal kits delivered throughout the UK.
Why we appreciate Riverford: The top recipe box services provide unique ingredients not typically found in supermarkets, creative recipe ideas that broaden culinary horizons, effective cooking tips, and sustainability efforts that extend beyond merely offsetting delivery emissions. Riverford excelled in all these areas during my testing.
However, it wasn’t without its drawbacks. The variety of recipes is less extensive compared to those offered by Gousto or HelloFresh, and the meals tend to be pricier. Nonetheless, Riverford offers around 13 recipe boxes and eight smaller kits each week, featuring a diverse range of dishes from curries and pasta to fajitas and mac and cheese. There are always vegetarian and vegan options available, along with meat and wild-caught fish selections.
Upon receiving my Riverford box, I was struck by the high-quality vegetables, including vibrant red and yellow peppers and exceptionally fresh lettuce, unlike anything found in stores. For those who prefer selecting their vegetables personally, Riverford’s produce is remarkable, although it’s advisable to use it promptly, as organic vegetables tend to spoil quickly.
The amount of plastic used in the Riverford box was minimal compared to other brands I tested, with dry goods like basmati rice packaged in paper. The company also maintains low emissions by delivering on a specific schedule based on location and offers free collection of packaging, including plastic, for reuse and recycling.
Alan and I prepared a couple of vegetarian meals from Riverford: falafels with lime and other dishes, further highlighting the quality and creativity of their offerings.
