CSK’s Bowling Coach Eric Simons Comments on 23-Run Victory Against DC: ‘The Team Was Eager to Break the Losing Streak’

After suffering three consecutive losses, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a strong comeback by defeating the Delhi Capitals (DC) by 23 runs on Saturday. Although Sanju Samson’s remarkable unbeaten 115 was a highlight, the bowling lineup also delivered an outstanding performance, particularly Jamie Overton, who took 4 wickets for just 18 runs. This victory marked CSK’s first win at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, after six unsuccessful attempts.

CSK set a formidable total of 212 runs for 2 wickets, showcasing a lively spirit on the field. The team’s energy, which had been lacking in previous matches, was revitalized, illustrated by Sarfaraz Khan’s exceptional catch at point to dismiss Axar Patel, which significantly boosted the team’s morale.

CSK’s bowling coach, Eric Simons, expressed his thoughts at the post-match press conference: “In this tournament, it’s crucial to build momentum and maintain a positive atmosphere. Following a win like this, the positivity is evident, and even before this match, our practices and attitudes were encouraging. Today, the players demonstrated strong self-belief. Was that lacking in earlier games? No, I believe self-belief was there; fielding often reflects a team’s mood, and Sarfaraz’s catch elevated everyone’s spirits. The players were eager to win after a series of losses, leading to a determined attitude, but the self-belief has consistently been present.”

Prior to the match, there were concerns regarding CSK’s ability to bounce back from a heavy defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru the previous Sunday. However, Simons maintained that the team’s spirit in the dressing room remained high despite the three losses. “It’s a habit to become accustomed to challenging situations and overcoming them. Tonight, the atmosphere in the changing room is excellent, but it never truly dipped. While others viewed our performance against RCB as a significant setback, we felt we weren’t far off. Even if we could have adjusted our bowling to concede 30 fewer runs, chasing a target of 220 and nearing 210 after losing an early wicket showed we were still in it,” the South African coach remarked.

Although Overton did not receive the Man of the Match accolade, Simons praised the English bowler’s efforts. Overton’s ability to bowl at speeds in the mid-140 km/h range and his skill in hitting the hard lengths proved essential on a pitch where nearly 400 runs were scored. “It’s important for each player to find their own way to contribute effectively. Last week, he attempted something that didn’t work, but he capitalized on his strengths tonight, focusing on hard lengths. He has always had a reliable yorker and has developed an off-pace delivery, which is particularly effective when bowling at 150 km/h and dropping to under 120 km/h,” Simons explained.
