Fugitive Gang Leader Linked to 16 Crimes Deported from Thailand and Captured by Haryana Special Task Force

The Haryana Police’s Special Task Force (STF) apprehended gangster Sahil Chauhan, known as Sahil Rana, on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport upon his deportation from Thailand, according to a senior police official. Chauhan, who hails from Shahzadpur in Ambala, was implicated in 16 serious criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms. He had been evading law enforcement since 2024 after breaching bail conditions related to a shooting incident involving a rival gangster.

A Look Out Circular (LOC) and a Red Corner Notice were issued for his arrest in 2025. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) tracked him down in Bangkok, where he was detained prior to his deportation. The CBI confirmed that it worked in conjunction with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate Chauhan’s return from Thailand.

Chauhan was an important figure within the Bhuppi Rana and Bambiha gangs and began his criminal activities in 2016, operating primarily in the states of Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh. He also had connections with the Kaushal Chaudhary gang based in Gurgaon. STF Inspector General B. Satheesh Balan noted that Chauhan became affiliated with the Bhuppi Rana gang at the age of 18. His extensive criminal record encompasses grave offenses such as murder, attempted murder, robbery, extortion, intimidation, and breaches of the Arms Act, with significant influence in regions including Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Ambala, and Panchkula.

In January 2017, he received a 10-year prison sentence for shooting at rival gangster Monu Rana in a Jagadhari court. However, after being released on bail in 2024, Chauhan first escaped to Bengaluru and subsequently fled abroad using a counterfeit passport.

His travels took him through Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Angola. Recently, he arrived in Thailand, attempting to renew his father’s passport to facilitate his father’s medical treatment. The STF was made aware of his presence in Thailand, leading to his eventual capture.

Chauhan attempted to travel to Portugal but returned to Thailand when that plan fell through. He was apprehended at Bangkok airport, following the issuance of the Red Corner Notice, and his fraudulent passport was confiscated on March 17 of this year.

This marks the fifth deportation executed by the Haryana Police in 2026, with previous deportations this year including individuals such as Ankit Shokeen, Aman Bhainswal, Sombir Motta, and Shilu Dahar. Additionally, several other gangsters, including Rao Indrajit Yadav, are currently detained in Dubai and other nations, with their extradition processes underway.
