A parakeet has recently garnered significant attention online after embarking on an underwater excursion in the Bahamas alongside its owner. The bird, named Bebe, was equipped with a specially designed device that allowed it to ‘snorkel’ safely.
According to The Sun, this homemade contraption consisted of a small submersible featuring a paintball air tank, an oxygen meter, and lead weights, enabling the bird to explore beneath the water’s surface without risk.
A viral video showcases the six-year-old parakeet calmly resting inside a transparent tube as it swims at a depth of three feet. The footage was shared by a user on X, known as Science Girl, who commented, “There is a guy who takes his pet parakeet on adventures. Here he is scuba diving in the Bahamas.”
The post quickly gained traction, eliciting a flurry of reactions from viewers. One social media user remarked, “That bird just became the first to explore underwater life. He’s about to be famous among the others!” while another added, “That parakeet is living the ultimate adventure life.”
A third user expressed their delight, saying, “Bebe is living his best life in the Bebosphere. This little parakeet is braver than most humans… the way Bebe is casually observing the fish like it’s Netflix underwater is priceless. What an incredible bond!”
Steven Lawyer, the bird’s owner, explained that the concept arose organically from their shared experiences. “We enjoy snorkeling, and he loves to join us in whatever we’re doing,” he told CBS affiliate WBNS. “So I thought, ‘Let’s find a way for him to snorkel with us.’”
The device, affectionately called the ‘Bebosphere’, appeared to function effectively, as Bebe remained calm throughout the dive. Lawyer noted that the bird showed no signs of distress during the experience. “I know my bird well; I can tell when he’s anxious,” Lawyer stated to WBNS. “In that video, he seems intrigued. He willingly entered the tube.”
This isn’t Bebe’s first venture into extreme activities. The adventurous parakeet has previously taken part in 15 skydives, secured in a clear enclosure attached to Lawyer’s chest during the jumps.
