Asha Bhosle, the iconic playback singer from Bollywood, has passed away at the age of 92.
Throughout her illustrious career, she recorded over 12,000 songs and became one of the most revered voices in Indian cinema.
Her family announced that her final rites will take place on Monday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, as confirmed by her son to the press.
Asha Bhosle, a legendary figure in Indian playback singing, whose contributions shaped Bollywood music during the 1970s and 1980s, has died at 92 years old.
According to her family, Bhosle breathed her last at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she was receiving treatment for severe exhaustion and a chest infection.
Anand Bhosle, her son, shared with reporters, “My mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.”
Over a remarkable seven-decade career, Bhosle recorded an impressive catalog of more than 12,000 songs in various Indian languages.
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed her sorrow on social media, stating, “I am profoundly saddened by the passing of the great musical genius Asha Bhosle. She has been an inspiring and mesmerizing singer who reigned over our hearts for generations.”
Born on September 8, 1933, into a family steeped in music, Bhosle started her singing journey as a child alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, after their father passed away.
While often compared to the esteemed Lata Mangeshkar, known as “India’s Nightingale” who passed away in 2022, Bhosle carved out her own unique niche, embracing a wide range of musical styles from pop to folk.
Her early life was not without challenges, as she faced a tumultuous marriage at the young age of 16.
Despite these obstacles, she evolved into one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in Indian cinema, receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001 and achieving two Grammy nominations.
Even in her later years, Bhosle continued to collaborate with international artists, recently featuring on the album “The Mountain” by the British virtual band Gorillaz.
In addition to her musical endeavors, she pursued her love for culinary arts by launching a restaurant chain called “Asha’s” in Dubai and the UK.
