Cricket has long been a battleground for rivalry between England and Australia. This past summer, when the Ashes series returned, my son and I embarked on a journey from Ballarat to Adelaide to witness the action at the third Test. Although it was a lengthy drive, we transformed it into a boys’ trip, enjoying stops at various pubs along the way.
The trip marked the beginning of what felt like a crucial pilgrimage for cricket enthusiasts. However, upon arriving at the Adelaide Oval, we were greeted by sweltering heat, with temperatures soaring to an unbearable 40 degrees Celsius. To make matters worse, our seats were positioned directly in the sun, leaving us exposed without any shade.
As the heat intensified, sitting in the stands became increasingly unbearable, and many spectators began to leave for the bar in search of relief. I suffer from vertigo, and when the heat triggered an episode, I had no option but to vacate my seat and find shelter near the exit. I settled on a shaded staircase to regain my composure, coming to terms with the fact that I might miss the match.
Before long, a member of the Barmy Army, England’s enthusiastic supporters, approached me to check on my well-being. After sharing that the heat was overwhelming, he promptly offered me a solution.
“We have some seats in the shade. Would you like to join us?” he asked.
He and a friend from the UK were in Australia with their young sons for the Ashes and had a couple of extra seats available. I gratefully accepted their invitation, and we spent the remainder of the day together, forging a delightful friendship and sharing rounds of drinks. Their camaraderie, along with that of their children, was truly enjoyable.
I was genuinely moved by the kindness of a stranger. Despite my obvious Australian heritage, as indicated by my Adelaide cricket cap, this English supporter went out of his way to assist a member of the opposing team.
Thanks to this thoughtful gesture, I remained at the game and was able to witness Travis Head’s remarkable century. It was an unforgettable match, highlighted by an equally remarkable act of generosity from a devoted fan of our rivals.
