Jannik Sinner triumphs over Carlos Alcaraz at the Monte Carlo Masters, regaining the top spot in the world rankings.

On Sunday, Jannik Sinner triumphed over Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, securing his first Monte Carlo Masters title and reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking from his Spanish opponent. Sinner won the match with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-3, marking his third ATP 1000 title of the year, having previously achieved the “Sunshine Double” with victories in Indian Wells and Miami last month.

The 24-year-old Sinner becomes only the third player, alongside Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, to win four consecutive ATP 1000 titles, having also clinched the title in Paris at the conclusion of the previous season. This match was their first encounter since Sinner’s victory at the ATP Finals in November. Currently, Sinner’s career record against Alcaraz stands at 7-10, and he is set to return to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time this year on Monday.

Sinner has been on an impressive winning streak, securing 17 consecutive victories and becoming the first male player since Djokovic in 2015 to win the first three ATP 1000 events of the season. Following the match, Sinner expressed his thoughts on court, stating, “We came here just trying to get as many matches as possible, having good feedback before other big tournaments coming up. Today was very high-level from both of us. It was a bit windy, breezy, completely different conditions than the tournament until today. But look, the result is amazing. Getting back to number one means a lot to me. At the same time, as I always say, the ranking is secondary. I’m very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven’t done it before, so it means a lot to me.”

Alcaraz initially surged ahead with a 2-0 lead in the first set, comfortably holding serve before breaking Sinner’s serve with a series of impressive forehands. However, Sinner quickly responded by breaking back. Alcaraz faced break points in the fifth and ninth games as Sinner intensified his efforts during a first set filled with errors, which ultimately led to a tie-break. Alcaraz faltered first in the tie-break, allowing Sinner to take a 5-2 lead. Although Sinner made a mistake at set point, he ultimately clinched the set 7-6 after Alcaraz double-faulted.

In the second set, Alcaraz had chances to break Sinner’s serve but failed to capitalize, though he eventually leveled the score. After gaining a break, Sinner continued to pressure Alcaraz’s service game, breaking him again in the sixth game. Sinner then pulled ahead 5-3 and maintained his advantage, serving out the match in a total time of two hours and 15 minutes, securing his victory.
