Maharashtra Educators Plan Statewide Protests Amid Salary Payment Delays

Teachers from both aided and government schools in Maharashtra have issued a warning of a potential statewide protest if their salaries for the month of March are not disbursed within the week, as the delays have surpassed the usual payment timeline.

This announcement reflects escalating frustration among both teaching and non-teaching staff, many of whom are struggling to meet their household expenses, repay loans, and cover their children’s educational costs. As of April 13, salaries that are usually credited within the first few days of the month remain unpaid, leaving employees without any official updates from the state’s school education department.

The Maharashtra Purogami Teachers Association has officially reached out to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior education officials, labeling the salary delays as a significant procedural error and urging for immediate action.

“Receiving a monthly salary is a fundamental right, and this postponement is completely intolerable. If the salaries are not released within this week, we will commence a statewide protest,” stated Tanaji Kamble, the association’s state president. He further mentioned that while the government may be looking into irregularities, it is unfair to penalize honest employees by withholding their earnings.

Teachers have expressed that the delay has already imposed serious financial burdens on them. “While occasional delays can happen at the end of the financial year, this situation is far from normal. We have been waiting for nearly two weeks now, and managing basic expenses has become increasingly difficult,” commented a senior teacher from a school in Mumbai.

Mahesh Palkar, the Director of School Education (Secondary), dismissed any link between the salary delays and the ongoing verification process in the Shalarth system. “This is a typical delay associated with the end of the financial year, which is not unusual. Bills have been processed, and salaries will be released shortly,” he stated. Informally, officials have suggested that the delays are due to a technical issue within the Shalarth system, the payroll platform responsible for salary disbursement. This complication coincides with a digital verification initiative aimed at employee records, launched following a scam involving fraudulent Shalarth IDs that were used to generate unauthorized salary payments.

Union representatives emphasized that while investigating irregularities is essential, genuine employees should not be adversely affected by administrative shortcomings. “While we must address any irregularities, it is crucial that honest employees are not harmed due to these administrative delays,” Kamble remarked.
