FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Defence Ministry of Sri Lanka is actively seeking to equip its retiring Navy personnel with professional qualifications that are recognized internationally, aiming to enhance their job prospects abroad, as stated in an official announcement.
On March 30, a meeting was convened to explore employment prospects in the shipping and marine industries for retired Navy members. The discussion highlighted the absence of globally recognized professional certification necessary for securing positions in the international maritime sector, as well as the urgent need to create a framework that assists retiring naval staff in obtaining these certifications, according to a press release from the Department of Defense.
This meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara and Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku.
During the discussions, it was noted that a significant number of well-trained and capable personnel exit the Navy each year, bringing with them valuable technical skills and experience. Participants underscored the need to leverage this expertise to enhance their employability in the global shipping and marine industries.
Facilitating foreign employment for Navy personnel could increase remittances, which represent a crucial part of Sri Lanka’s foreign revenue. The government has previously committed to generating job opportunities for retired military members, particularly following reports of former servicemen engaging in conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war as mercenaries due to limited job options.
In June 2025, the government recruited 10,000 retired military officers into the Police service as part of these initiatives. (Colombo/March 31/2026)
