In a recent announcement, the Election Commission revealed that authorities have confiscated cash, liquor, narcotics, and various gifts valued at over Rs 651.51 crore related to the ongoing Assembly elections across four states and one Union Territory.
Among the total seizures, West Bengal accounted for Rs 319 crore, which included Rs 11 crore in cash, 21.29 lakh liters of liquor valued at Rs 55 crore, drugs estimated at Rs 65 crore, precious metals worth Rs 39 crore, and additional gifts totaling Rs 150 crore. Other significant seizures included Rs 170 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs 97 crore in Assam, Rs 58 crore in Kerala, and Rs 7 crore in Puducherry.
The Election Commission has conducted several discussions with Chief Secretaries, Chief Electoral Officers, Directors General of Police, and other high-ranking officials from the four states and the single Union Territory currently facing elections, as well as from the twelve neighboring states and UTs. The aim is to ensure that the electoral process remains free from violence, intimidation, and inducements.
To facilitate this, a total of 5,173 flying squads and 5,200 static surveillance teams have been deployed. The Commission emphasized the necessity for enforcement agencies to minimize inconvenience or harassment to the public during inspections related to these regulations. Additionally, District Grievance Committees have been established to handle any complaints regarding the enforcement process.
The Election Commission had previously announced the five Assembly elections on March 15. Polling in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry is scheduled for April 9, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal on April 23 and April 29, respectively. The counting of votes will take place on May 4.
