A cruise ship operating in Fiji has run aground close to Monuriki Island, the filming location for the movie “Cast Away.”
According to the Fiji Navy, all 30 passengers aboard the vessel were successfully evacuated and returned to Fiji’s main island.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is reportedly in the process of compiling a report regarding the incident.
The Blue Lagoon Cruises ship, named Fiji Princess, ran aground on a reef adjacent to Monuriki Island during its seven-day cruise on Saturday, as reported by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation.
Monuriki Island is popularly known as “Cast Away Island” due to its association with the 2000 film featuring Tom Hanks.
Social media footage displayed the 55-meter-long ship stranded on the reef near the island.
A representative from the government confirmed that the cruise operator successfully transported all passengers back to Port Denarau, situated in the Nadi region of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.
As of now, the ship remains lodged on the reef, according to FBC reports.
Blue Lagoon Cruises did not provide a comment when approached for information.
It remains uncertain if any Australians were among those on board.
Sources from the Fiji Navy informed the ABC that the Fiji Princess carried 30 passengers and approximately 30 crew members.
“All were safely evacuated yesterday and taken to Denarau,” they stated. “We understand there are still some crew members on board. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and everyone is safe. The company is currently working on the salvage and recovery of the vessel.”
The ABC has learned that the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is preparing to release a report on the situation.
