Individual apprehended at courthouse during proceedings for suspects in Jewish ambulance arson case.

The Metropolitan Police have announced the arrest of a fourth individual linked to the arson incident involving Jewish volunteer ambulances in north-west London. The 19-year-old suspect was apprehended on Saturday morning at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where three other men were facing charges related to the same attack.

According to police, officers recognized the 19-year-old as they were present for the hearing of the other suspects. He was subsequently arrested on charges of arson with intent to endanger life and taken into custody.

Hamza Iqbal, aged 20, and Rehan Khan, aged 19, both from Leyton in the UK, along with a 17-year-old dual British and Pakistani national from Walthamstow, have been charged with arson aimed at damaging property and recklessness regarding the potential endangerment of life. None of them entered pleas during the hearing, and all were remanded in custody.

The 19-year-old was seen being escorted from the courthouse, where it was also reported that four individuals were allegedly involved in the arson attack. The incident took place in the early hours of March 23, when four ambulances from Hatzola, a volunteer ambulance service active in the Golders Green area, were set ablaze, resulting in explosions from gas canisters stored within the vehicles.

This latest arrest is based on suspicions of arson with intent to endanger life. The court proceedings revealed strong evidence indicating that the attack was a “premeditated and targeted assault on the Jewish community.” The prosecution is currently investigating the possible involvement of an Iranian-backed group that has claimed responsibility.

During the court session, the three individuals present were dressed in grey tracksuits and only confirmed their names and addresses. Family members were in attendance to support them.

While the counter-terrorism police are spearheading the investigation, the Metropolitan Police have clarified that the incident has not been classified as terrorism. Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads the counter-terrorism unit in London, stated, “Since this horrific attack last week, we have been working tirelessly to investigate and identify those responsible. The investigation has progressed to the point where three individuals have been charged and are appearing in court.”

She added, “The community’s support since the incident has been remarkable, and we will continue to collaborate with local law enforcement to ensure public safety.” In response to the attack, police patrols have been increased in areas with significant Jewish populations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously characterized the attack as a “deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack.”
