Ravi Shastri envisions a bright future for Riyan Parag following his thrilling leadership that secured a win for RR against GT.

The Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious against the Gujarat Titans in what is regarded as one of the most thrilling encounters of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, held in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Although the Royals seemed to be heading towards an easy win for a significant portion of the match, they faced a daunting challenge from Rashid Khan, who was leading the Titans in the absence of injured captain Shubman Gill, alongside Kagiso Rabada.

Despite the mounting pressure, the Royals maintained their composure, with Jofra Archer and Tushar Deshpande guiding the team to victory in the final two overs. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri commended RR skipper Riyan Parag following the match, suggesting that the batting all-rounder has a promising future ahead, particularly in a leadership capacity.

“This is undoubtedly one of the finest games in IPL history. Make sure to archive this one! @ParagRiyan, you possess remarkable resolve and a bright future, especially as a leader. Your temperament was outstanding. Well done! IPL Zindabad! @rajasthanroyals #GTvsRR #IPL2026,” Shastri remarked on social media platform X.

At just 24 years old, Parag has been recognized as one of the most promising young players in the league since his early seasons with the Royals. Although he has yet to make a significant impact on the international stage, Parag has solidified his position within the Royals over the years. He was appointed captain last season when regular skipper Sanju Samson was sidelined due to a finger injury. With Samson’s move to CSK this season, Parag has been named the permanent captain of the franchise.

Parag made his international debut in a T20I match against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2024. To date, he has participated in nine T20Is, with his most recent appearance occurring in October 2024. He has accumulated 106 runs with an average of 17.66 and a strike rate of 151.42, along with claiming four wickets in this format. Additionally, he has played one ODI for India, which took place against Sri Lanka in Colombo on August 7, 2024. In that match, Parag was India’s leading wicket-taker, achieving figures of 3/54, and contributed 15 runs off 13 balls as India faced a heavy defeat by 110 runs.
