The song I have memorized completely is “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley. This was the track I submitted on tape for my audition with the band Blue.
For karaoke, I often perform at a venue that sits above a Chinese restaurant during my 30th birthday celebration. My mother chose to sing “It’s Raining Men” as Geri Halliwell unexpectedly entered the bar. In a burst of enthusiasm, she pulled Geri on stage, insisting, “Sing. It’s your song.” I thought to myself, “Mom, she just got here. Take it easy!”
The first single I ever purchased was influenced by my time spent with my grandparents, as my mother worked as a nurse. My grandmother claimed that pop music was unpleasant to her ears, so I asked my friend Tracy to buy something from Woolworths that would be acceptable to my gran. Tracy selected “Sadeness (Part I)” by Enigma, featuring Gregorian chants alongside a rather sensual segment.
The first track that captured my heart was “Fantasy Island” by Tight Fit. I vividly recall bouncing on the sofa and spinning around, possibly because I was infatuated with the guy sporting a zebra print headband in the music video.
A song that never fails to bring me to tears is “My Life Is Going On” by Cecilia Krull, which is the theme for the Spanish Netflix series “La Casa De Papel” (Money Heist). This show, which premiered during the lockdown, has left a profound impact on me.
During an encounter with someone I had just met, he chose to play “One Love” by Blue. I responded, “Why would I want to get intimate listening to my own voice?” He thought it would be amusing, but I insisted, “No. That’s unsettling. Please change the music immediately.”
A pivotal moment in my career occurred when we traveled to Norway to record “All Rise.” The producers directed us to deliver a tough, staccato performance over an intense techno beat. However, the final version turned out to be entirely different from our original recording, ultimately becoming a global sensation and sparking what I refer to as Bluemania.
I have a fondness for musical theater, so whenever “Defying Gravity” from Wicked plays at a gathering, I’m likely to find myself dancing on a table.
One song I can no longer enjoy is “Meu Abrigo” (My Shelter) by the Brazilian band Melim, as it brings back memories of my ex and evokes feelings of sadness.
A track I secretly adore, despite publicly criticizing it, is “Doctor Jones” by Aqua. I find it to be a fantastic song, even though it often leads people to question my taste in music.
For my funeral, I would love to have “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen played. It’s one of the finest songs ever crafted and offers a unique choice if you wish to avoid a somber atmosphere during such a moment.
Blue’s latest album, “Reflections,” has been released, and they are set to tour the UK from April 7 to May 26.
